Not all professional basketball players' success is measured by NBA championships. For the "less fortunate," overseas basketball offers an extended professional career for those who couldn't maintain a roster spot in the NBA. Former Golden State Warriors Anthony Randolph is a shining example of a player who made the most of his playing career, even when the NBA no longer needed his service.
After 15 years of commitment, Randolph announced retirement.
Randolph played 96 games with the Warriors after they selected the German native as the No. 14 pick in the 2008 NBA Draft. During his short tenure with the Warriors, Randolph averaged 9.2 points, six rebounds, and 1.3 blocks.
The Woodrow Wilson High School graduate of Dallas, Texas, enjoyed six seasons in the NBA. When the most popular and talented professional basketball league no longer had a spot on their 30-team roster, the athletic frontcourt player took his skills overseas.
In 2014, Randolph began his professional basketball career abroad. He played in Russia for two years before moving to Real Madrid in 2016. During his time playing overseas, Randolph accumulated a long list of accolades.
Two-time EuroLeague champion, three-time Liga ACB champion, two-time Spanish Cup winner, five-time Spanish Supercup, and winner 2017 EuroBasket gold medalist
Randolph shared a heartfelt message on social media.
"Thank you to the fans who made every game special and believed in it through it all," Randolph stated. "Basketball has given me more than I could have ever dreamed, shaping me both as a player and as a person. While this chapter comes to a close, I'm excited for what lies ahead and the new opportunities to continue growing and giving back."
Although the former Warriors forward has years of stats that point to his talents, Randolph's closing sentence reveals who he is as a person, more than any stat could relay of his game.
