Joe Mazzulla has responded after Giannis Antetokounmpo openly praised the Boston Celtics’ culture, highlighting what he believes truly drives success in the NBA.
The comments came after Giannis pointed to Boston as a model for winning mentality, something that has become central to how the Celtics are viewed across the league.
Antetokounmpo’s remarks quickly put Mazzulla and the organization back into the spotlight because they shifted the focus slightly.
Giannis shared his view in comments reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, where he highlighted what stood out about Boston’s approach.
The focus was not just on talent, but on the mindset created within the team.
He said, “Everything about my decision is based on winning culture. Like you saw I talked with coach Joe Mazzulla. I said, ‘You had so many opportunities to make excuses, but you didn’t.’
“And he said, ‘Oh, they’re good players.’ I said, ‘No. It’s about the mentality that you instilled in your place.'”
The praise centred on accountability and consistency, key elements of the Celtics’ recent success.
Mazzulla responded to those comments in a clip shared via Justin Turpin, offering his own perspective on what drives the team. Rather than focusing on culture alone, he pointed directly to the players themselves.
Mazzulla said, “My reaction was like, you can’t do anything unless you have the players. I say it a lot, but it’s just that simple.”
He added: “I think the greatest gift you can have as a coach, especially in the NBA, is a group of players that have a high competitive character, care about winning and want to get better.”
The response reflects a more grounded view, emphasising personnel over narrative. It also reinforces why Boston’s success is often linked as much to its roster as to its coaching philosophy.
