What Klay Thompson Taught Naji Marshall and Max Christie

The Dallas Mavericks and Klay Thompson agreed to a contract buyout last month, which allowed him to later Thompson sign with the Miami Heat.

“Klay is one of the great players and competitors of his generation, and we are grateful for everything he brought to the Mavericks organization,” said Mavericks President of Basketball Operations Masai Ujiri. “We have tremendous respect for Klay and all that he has accomplished throughout his career, and we wish him nothing but the best moving forward.”

During his time with the Mavericks, the four-time champion and future Hall of Fame guard appeared in 141 games (with 80 starts) in his two seasons with Dallas. Thompson also averaged 12.9 points on 40.3% shooting from the field and 38.7% from three, according to Mavs.com.

On January 15^th, he would surpass Blazers guard Damian Lillard for fourth all-time on the All-Time 3-point field goals made list. Thompson currently sits at 2,899 3-pointers made.

“It’s been awesome, especially when I shoot the ball well, and we win. What a nice combo. On top of that, to be in the history books at No. 4 right now is pretty sweet…Just to keep climbing that ladder and have a chance to pass Ray (Allen) one day.”

“I’ll never forget when I was a rookie, I put in my Twitter bio that I’m chasing Ray Allen, and a lot of internet people said that was unrealistic for me, so it’s nice to have a chance to pass one of my idols.”

Per Spotrac, Thompson signed a two-year deal with the Miami Heat worth $11.48 million, pairing him with Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.

“Klay is one of the most iconic players to ever suit up in the NBA,” Heat president Pat Riley said in a statement. “A four-time battle-tested world champion who will fit perfectly into his role as an all-around player at both ends of the court. We all talk about his shooting skill, but there is so much more he brings to the game. We are blessed that Klay chose the Heat in our quest to challenge for championships.”

Marshall, Christie reflect on lessons from Klay Thompson’s Dallas tenure

During day two of training camp for the Dallas Mavericks, two of Thompson’s former teammates, Max Christie and Naji Marshall, shared what they learned from him over the past two seasons.

“Aside from obviously shooting technique, I think just his demeanor and how much confidence he has in himself,” said Christie.

“He kind of has this goldfish mentality where he forgets about the play that just happened, good or bad. That’s something I’ve tried to adopt and implement into my game as well.”

Marshall added: “Klay is just an overall good dude. I feel like that goes a long way. In careers, a lot of people who are good don’t make it because they’re simply a--holes. Klay’s the same person every day, on and off the court. He shows up and tries to compete. He won four championships; he knows what he’s doing. The gems he dropped off and just his presence were a blessing. I appreciate Klay to the max.”

Max Christie has spent a year and half with the Mavericks after being a part of the trade that sent Luka Dončić, Maxi Kleber, and Markieff Morris to Los Angeles in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and the Lakers’ 2029 first-round pick, according to ESPN.

Marshall has been with the Mavericks for two seasons now since signing with the team on a three-year deal, after spending his first four seasons in the NBA. The former Xavier Musketeers’ player recently signed an extension with the Mavericks worth $52.2 million full guaranteed.

Marshall averaged a career high of 15.2 points per game in 2025-26.
