Luka Doncic has impressed many people with his time at EuroBasket, with one Slovenian coach saying he’s done the one thing everyone always asked of him.
Luka Doncic has had a transformative offseason, in more ways than one. The Los Angeles Lakers megastar knew he needed to make some big changes this summer.
For starters, Doncic impressed Lakers fans with his new physique, putting in the effort to improve his conditioning after years of criticism.
On top of that, Doncic re-signed with the Lakers for $165 million, committing to the franchise for years to come ahead of the EuroBasket tournament.
Speaking of EuroBasket, Luka was a machine at the tournament, ending his campaign as the leading scorer. One of his Slovenian coaches believes he addressed one of his biggest flaws at the tournament.
According to Dave McMenamin of ESPN, Luka Doncic impressed several members of his coaching staff at EuroBasket.
In fact, Slovenia and LA Lakers assistant coach, Greg St. Jean, told head coach Aleksander Sekulic that Luka was Slovenia’s best defensive player at the tournament.
“At one point during the tournament, sources told ESPN, St. Jean showed a video edit of Doncic’s defensive effort to Slovenia’s coach, Aleksander Sekulić.
“St. Jean believed that Doncic, beyond his offensive brilliance, was the team’s best defensive player, too.
“The edit showed — possession by possession — Doncic’s proper placement, communication with teammates, and overall commitment.”
Luka Doncic did play some really strong defense at EuroBasket. But it’s not going to be enough for Lakers fans.
They will want to see Doncic continue to play defense at a high level for them next season. Even if he isn’t putting up DPOY numbers, just the effort alone will go a long way.
If Doncic’s defensive woes are behind him, he could help lead the Lakers to the NBA Finals. That is how much of a game-changer his effort on defense can be.
Fans will be eagerly anticipating the LA Lakers’ media day next week, as it will be their first glimpse of the new Luka Doncic in the Lakers uniform.
