When Donovan Mitchell signed his three-year extension with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2024, most people assumed the decision came down to basketball reasons. Cleveland had a talented roster, a strong coaching staff and looked like a team capable of making deep playoff runs for years to come.

But for Mitchell, there was another factor that mattered just as much, if not more. Away from the court, he had built a level of comfort and connection in Cleveland that made staying with the Cavaliers feel like the right move for his future.

For Mitchell, one of the biggest selling points was the way the Cavaliers take care of people behind the scenes which he mentioned in a recent interview with Joe Vardon.

Food Played a Huge Role in Donovan Mitchell’s Decision

A lot of teams focus on facilities, charter flights and recovery programs, but Cleveland seems to have built a reputation for making life easier in every possible way. Mitchell recently admitted that the team’s travel setup, especially when it comes to food, made a real difference in how he viewed the organization.

Whenever the Cavs are on the road, the team reportedly sets up full meal service inside the hotel instead of sending players out to restaurants every night. That means breakfast, lunch and dinner are often prepared by high-end chefs and available just a short walk from the players’ rooms.

For someone like Mitchell, that convenience matters. NBA players spend a huge chunk of the season traveling, dealing with late flights, different cities and nonstop schedules. Having a setup where you can grab a good meal, relax and spend time with teammates without needing to leave the hotel can make life much easier.

It is not only about convenience either. Cleveland’s road meals are apparently open to almost everyone connected to the team. Coaches, trainers, broadcasters, support staff, family members and even drivers can all be part of it.

That kind of atmosphere has helped create a close-knit environment around the Cavs, and Mitchell clearly values that side of things.

He has said that Cleveland’s willingness to spend money on details like nutrition and comfort showed him how serious the organization is about taking care of its players.

That may not be the first thing fans think about when a star signs a massive contract extension, but in Mitchell’s case, it ended up being one of the biggest reasons he chose to stay in Cleveland.
