When it rains, it pours for the Golden State Warriors. Further slipping into the depths of the Western Conference playoff picture, the Memphis Grizzlies annihilated the Warriors 144-93 on Thursday at FedExForum. Although the Warriors didn't accomplish anything worth celebrating, Draymond Green broke an unflattering NBA record with his significantly barren stat line.
On a night where Stephen Curry and Green combined for two points, you'd expect the criticism to come flowing in at the Warriors' expense. However, instead of roast takes and verbal takedowns, statistical information provided the sting and proper perspective for such a failure of performance.
Green recently called Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins a "softie" due to his complaints about how the problematic defender fouled rookie center Zach Edey. In response, the Grizzlies destroyed the Warriors from the opening tip-off.
Although Green is otherwise an elite defender, he couldn't stop the nosebleed from the Grizzlies downpour of offense they rammed into the Warriors' face. Furthermore, he failed to register a single point.
According to Basketball Reference's tracking database, Green's stat line produced the worst plus-minus (-42) among players who recorded zero points, rebounds and assists.
Furthermore, Green choked up the ball on four occasions and committed four personal fouls. The Warriors veteran played the worst game in NBA history in only 19 minutes logged. Considering the Warriors and Grizzlies rivalry, you'd expect more effort from Green and his teammates overall.
Green's trash-talk of the Grizzlies didn't take long to haunt him as they kicked the Warriors down the steps of the Western Conference playoff picture. The Warriors sit at 14-12, which is good enough for the tenth seed out West.
However, good isn't good enough, especially for a team with significant aspirations. But ultimately, with Green showcasing such a barren stat line, the Warriors won't achieve anything besides getting knocked out of the playoffs.
