Even without winning another NBA championship, Golden State Warriors' Stephen Curry is among the sport's immortals. After the Warriors lost 111-107 at the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday, NBA Finals rival Kyrie Irving compared Curry to two NBA legends.
Although the Warriors lost to a Mavericks team that was missing their entire center depth chart, which included Anthony Davis, Dereck Lively II, and Daniel Gafford, the road team had a chance to steal the game.
Nonetheless, a win or a loss didn't place a blemish on Curry's legendary basketball resume. As the lone unanimous NBA MVP winner, Curry is in a league of his own. Moreover, his four NBA championships, with two other NBA Finals appearances, place him among some of the NBA's greats.
Mavericks guard Irving opted to name such legends, among whom he placed with Curry.
"I've gone on record saying that that's the guy for us as point guards, outside of Magic [Johnson] and Isiah Thomas, Steph has etched himself as one of the most legendary players of all-time. ... No jealousy or any hate, just straight competition... it's mutual respect, that's how I feel about it," Irving said."
Despite Irving and Curry having two polar opposite NBA careers, their battles in the NBA Finals rank high among entertaining playoff series. Moreover, as fellow star NBA guards, they are some of the most influential players in the league's history.
While Curry holds the crown for best shooter of all time, Irving is highly regarded as one of the top ball handlers and difficult layup finishers of all time. The two stars understand what it means to be held to a significantly high standard.
However, while Curry likely appreciates the legendary comparisons, the Warriors star probably has other goals, like winning his fifth NBA championship.
