What to expect after LeBron becomes scoring champion

LeBron James is 36 points from passing NBA all-time scoring leader Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who finished his career with 38,387 points. The torch for the scoring record hasn't changed hands since April 5, 1984, when Abdul-Jabbar surpassed Wilt Chamberlain.

James averages 30 points this season, so he will probably overtake Abdul-Jabbar on Tuesday against the Thunder or Thursday against the Bucks. Both are Lakers' home games.

So, what happens after the most esteemed record in pro basketball gets a new owner?

When Abdul-Jabbar broke the record with his signature hook shot, his teammates mobbed the new scoring champ and the media rushed onto the hardwood. Abdul-Jabbar's mom and dad attended the game.

Lakers play-by-play announcer Chick Hearn made the call: "This man has accomplished something that I don't believe — and I mean this sincerely — I don't think this will ever happen again."

James was not born until eight months later.

After Abdul Jabbar's short speech to the 18,389 fans in attendance, the game resumed. The Lakers would go on to beat the Jazz, 129-115.

The league has grown substantially since 1984. From pregame shows to retirement tours, the pageantry has grown, too. Commissioner Adam Silver said the league will honor the new all-time scoring leader.

In an interview in Paris, France, Silver said the NBA will "look into making sure that game isn't just national, but globally available."

He added that the game will undoubtedly be stopped to "make sure we've done our job as archivists of the NBA."

Silver also noted that the team playing the Lakers will likely want to avoid distraction as it will still be trying to win a game. So expect the in-game ceremonies to be respectful but short.

Silver noted a "perfect time" to honor James' accomplishment would be at the All-Star Game on Feb. 19 in Salt Lake City — if James breaks the record before then.

Who doubts that "The King" won't be crowned NBA scoring leader well before that game?
