In the Chicago Bulls' 124-119 overtime victory against the Houston Rockets on Wednesday, Zach LaVine was noticeably different. The two-time All-Star, typically an isolation player, posted a balanced stat line of 25 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists, and three steals. LaVine's performance sparked debate about the motivation behind this quick 180 in his game.
Trade rumors have swirled around LaVine for over a year, with reports earlier this season indicating he wants out of Chicago. Then, a foot injury sidelined him for 17 games while the Bulls shopped him. But as he neared a return to action, reports indicated there was no market for the 28-year-old. Now, LaVine is fully back in the swing of things as he no longer has a minutes restriction.
The aforementioned change in play could be a result of two very different things.
On one side of the coin, this is how Bulls head coach Billy Donovan has wanted his team to play. His philosophy ideally includes everyone touching the ball to get the best possible shot.
If LaVine is truly bought into the style he watched the Bulls implement while he was sidelined, this Bulls team could get really exciting again.
Conversely, the aforementioned lack of trade interest could be driving LaVine's changeup. The UCLA product may be realizing that strong, balanced play and proving he is a winner is the only way to reestablish trade value.
If LaVine were to be traded, he'd likely be the second or third scoring option on a true contender. He'd have his time to isolate with the ball in his hands, but playing in tandem with a big star requires a give and take. Alas, LaVine's recent change in play may just be one big audition for such a scenario.
So many Zach LaVine questions…

Is he really adapting to the #Bulls team game? Is it just a temporary spark due to a lacking trade market?
