If there was ever a time for Trae Young to break out his signature "ice cold" celebration, it was Tuesday night.
With 2.9 seconds left in the game and the Hawks out of timeouts, Young drained a 49-foot buzzer-beater to seal the Hawks' 124-121 win over the Jazz. The shot was extra special since Jazz guard Colin Sexton made a three less than a second before to tie the game at 121 apiece. At that point, Young could have dribbled out the clock and attempted to win the game in overtime. Instead, he launched a prayer from beyond halfcourt over the outstretched arms of a Jazz defender.

According to the NBA, Young's shot was the sixth-longest game-winning buzzer-beater in league history.
Devonte' Graham's 61-foot buzzer-beater in Dec. 2021 still holds the record for the farthest game-winner, followed by Max Strus (59-foot, Feb. 2024), Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf (55-foot, Nov. 1992), "Dr. J" Julius Erving (53-foot, Feb. 1986) and Tyreke Evans (50-foot, Dec. 2010). The St. Louis Bombers' Belus Smawley made a 50-foot shot in Nov. 1948, but that was before the inception of the three-point line.
In light of Young's hail Mary shot, the NBA compiled a video of the farthest game-winners since 2014.

Young made more history Tuesday by becoming the first player to record 20 assists and a game-winning buzzer-beater in the same game, per ESPN Research. He dished out 11 of those dimes in the second half as the Hawks survived a late avalanche from the Jazz to pull off the win.
After the game, Young spoke on the importance of setting the tone for his teammates and knowing when to take over as a scorer.
"This is part of what I do," Young said, via ESPN. "I always get guys involved, always been able to find people. I feel like I'm the kind of guy who can pass you open. You don't just have to be open for me to get you the ball. I can see things and get you into a good spot."
Averaging 12.2 dimes per game, Young is on pace to lead the league in assists for the first time in his career. The point guard led in total assists in 2021-22 (737) and 2022-23 (741), but finished second and third, respectively, in assist averages.
