Who Did Steve Kerr Critisize?

Jonathan Kuminga and the Golden State Warriors find themselves in a complicated situation. Despite Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr.'s refusal to include the young wing in a trade this past offseason, the two parties couldn't come to a contract extension agreement.

To make matters worse, Kuminga hasn't played well during their rough stretch. Steve Kerr recently bluntly criticized the Warriors role player.

Over the summer, the Warriors advertised Kuminga as a piece of the future, omitting him from trade talks for Utah Jazz All-Star Lauri Markkanen. However, failing to capitalize on the Warriors' faith, Kuminga hasn't produced significantly, even forcing Kerr to play the athletic wing off the bench for 15 games.

During the Warriors' media availability on Monday evening, ahead of their game against the Indiana Pacers, Kerr addressed Kuminga's disappointing season.

“I’m not going to stop coaching him," Kerr said. "The last two games, his field goal attempts, his decision making has been poor. That needs to improve.”

Although Kerr's commentary on Kuminga's season sounds harsh, it's the cold truth necessary given his severe underperformance during a contract season.

Kuminga is averaging 15 points on 43 percent shooting from the field and 23 percent from 3. Moreover, he's averaging a career-low 60 percent from the charity stripe, indicating a regression in his overall shooting.

The Warriors currently rank seventh in the Western Conference, holding a 3-7 record in their last 10 games. Kuminga's season is either a product of a lousy season or the process of extended growing pains for a player suffering a slow start. Regardless of how you spin Kuminga's underwhelming campaign, Kerr will continue to coach the wing until his career cycle finishes.
