Who is Jameer Nelson Jr.? Son of NBA superstar could take the leap to play with Victor Wembanyama on Spurs

Jameer Nelson Jr. is playing in his second Summer League for the San Antonio Spurs, and he looks the part of an NBA role player after a season spent in the G League.

The San Antonio Spurs’ Summer League team, on paper at least, is a blast from the past. Rashard Lewis is on the coaching staff and Jameer Nelson Jr., son of the All-Star, is lighting things up for the Spurs on the court.

Through two games, he is averaging 12.5 points and three assists. He has had no problem taking contact and getting to the free-throw line.

Of course, longtime fans will know that this is his second stint with the summer Spurs, although he has shown improvement from last season.

Jameer Nelson Jr. is making the most out of Summer League

In college, Nelson Jr. played for George Washington, Delaware, and TCU, standing out as a premier college player in the CAA. However, he went undrafted in 2024 and signed a contract with the Spurs, who eventually placed him in Austin on their G League team.

On the Austin Spurs, Nelson averaged 11.2 points and 2.2 assists, and his shooting left a lot to be desired. After the G League season, he headed north to the Canadian League and played in 12 games for the Calgary Surge, offering 18.9 points and 4.5 assists per game.

Being a good player in Canada is still a far cry from NBA stardom, although the Spurs could use a player like him to put some pressure on the young core they have built around Victor Wembanyama.

Nelson Jr. could give the Spurs exactly what they need with Wembanyama

Between De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper, the Spurs have more than their fair share of high-end guard talent. It stands to reason that one of those point guards will come off the bench, sharing the backcourt with Blake Wesley and Malaki Branham.

Wesley and Branham were both first-round picks in 2022, although neither has found their footing in the NBA despite having chances. Their rookie contracts will be up this season, and they will be restricted free agents.

For now, there’s no reason to think that the Spurs will retain either of them, although with Nelson Jr. possibly ready to sign a two-way contract and steal some minutes, as well as last year’s second-round pick, Juan Nunez, still stashed in the Spanish League, the pressure is on.

Nelson Jr. will not be a key player for the Spurs in the era of Wemby, although he could help the organization weed out who is worth holding onto and who might find success elsewhere.
