NBA rivalries often fade once the buzzer sounds, but some moments carry over. That tension resurfaced again in late December, when emotions boiled over between Dennis Schroder and Luka Doncic. The incident was all about trash-talking, showcasing pride and money simultaneously, which ultimately turned out to be much more than just a basketball game.
The situation centered on Dennis Schroder and Luka Doncic after the Sacramento Kings faced the Los Angeles Lakers. What started as on-court jawing followed both players into the tunnel after Sacramento’s January 10, 2026, loss.
Former NBA star Paul Pierce later explained why things escalated. “He went at him about his paper that’s a sensitive subject. That’s like messing with somebody girl when you talk about his paper like that especially when you lose the money you had a chance to sign a contract. He called you pretty much a dummy for not taking that contract. Luka wrote a check his a** couldn’t cash.”

The league agreed that the moment crossed a line. Schroder received a three-game suspension for confronting and attempting to strike another player. The NBA cited the tunnel incident as the reason for the punishment, not the trash talk itself.
The anger traces back to December 28 at Crypto.com Arena. During the Lakers-Kings game, Luka Doncic brought up Dennis Schroder’s rejected contract while they argued on the floor, shifting routine trash talk into something deeply personal.
Schroder’s contract story has followed him for years. In 2021, he turned down a four-year deal worth about $84 million with the Lakers and later signed a one-year contract in Boston, becoming a league-wide example of a costly decision.
Paul Pierce said money talks crosses a line for players from his era. Lost money is viewed as a sign of disrespect, not banter. The Kings and Lakers meet again on March 1 in Los Angeles, with Schroder eligible to return.
