Why did Lonnie Walker IV cut his trademark hairstyle
USA TODAY Sports

In the early days of his career with the San Antonio Spurs, Lonnie Walker IV turned heads with his bold and eye-catching hair. From the moment he was drafted in 2018, that unique hairstyle became as much a part of his identity as his explosive moves on the basketball court.

In 2020, he cut his hair and revealed that he was a victim of sexual abuse by family members when he was an adolescent. He grew out his hair as a way to cope with what happened to him but during that year, he felt he needed to shed his skin by cutting his hair.

“I got to a point when I was reaching a new chapter in my life, I decided to cut it. Understanding that the past is the past,” Lonnie said on the Voice of the Nets Podcast with Chris Carrino. “Me knowing the bigger picture, which is knowing I’m not the only one. I think me voicing my story, me telling others would help.”

Lonnie’s strength resonates with fans

Ever since he released his message back in 2020, people have been behind him, showing him support whether it was with the Spurs, the Los Angeles Lakers, or now the Nets. Lonnie has faced multiple serious issues in his life but he remains strong, which is a trait that people who are going through similar things want to see.

They want to see someone who went through such harsh tragedies in his life keep going and show that they’re more than what happened to them. Now, Lonnie has become one of the recognized off-the-bench players in the league and his success stems from his strong mindset despite battling these issues for a long time.

Lonnie’s journey has inspired all kinds of people

Being an elite athlete like Lonnie, some people might see him as a larger-than-life figure. That is not at all true because Lonnie has suffered through problems that a lot of common folks have experienced. He is just a normal guy who can play basketball at an elite level.

People love to see Lonnie succeed and he is doing so with the Nets in the 2023/24 season. If he continues to play at a high level like he has this campaign, there will be a Sixth Man of the Year to watch for Lonnie’s fans. He might not have the trademark hair anymore but it shows that he has fought tooth and nail to reach this level of success nowadays.
