Why Kings Trading Tyrese Haliburton, De'Aaron Fox Set Franchise Up For Failure

It was another disappointing season for the Sacramento Kings as they failed to make the playoffs for the 18th time in the last 19 seasons.

Of course, Sacramento had high expectations entering the season after adding DeMar DeRozan to their roster alongside Domantas Sabonis and De’Aaron Fox in the offseason.

That did not work out well though as the Kings had an abysmal start to the year, firing head coach Mike Brown in late December then trading Fox at the trade deadline.

Sacramento went on to finish ninth in the Western Conference before being eliminated in the Play-In Tournament to the Dallas Mavericks.

With the Kings season now over, they have an interesting offseason ahead of them with a crucial decision to make as they could either run it back with eh same squad or start a rebuild.

Sacramento has not made many good moves over the prior five seasons and two have haunted their franchise’s future.

Those trades involved Fox and Tyrese Haliburton, two franchise point guards that the Kings could have used this season.

Of course, the Kings did have Fox this season before sending him to the San Antonio Spurs at the trade deadline after the two sides had grown apart.

In the trade, the Kings received a modest return for their franchise guard as the headliner of the deal was landing Zach LaVine from the Chicago Bulls, which did not turn out well at the end of the season.

Years before they traded Fox, the Kings made another questionable move to trade away Haliburton, whom they selected with the 12th pick in the 2020 draft.

Sacramento did not like the pairing of Fox and Haliburton in the backcourt, electing to send Haliburton to the Indiana Pacers in the trade that landed them Sabonis.

While Sabonis has turned into a star with the Kings, Haliburton has turned himself into one of the best point guards in the NBA and there is no doubt that Sacramento could have used him this season.

With both of their franchise guards gone and Sacramento not getting a ton in return, it has hurt the Kings future and they may elect to begin a rebuild in the offseason to start over after their disappointing season.
