The Dallas Mavericks (7-15) are sitting close to the bottom of the Western Conference standings as the NBA calendar turns to December. Kyrie Irving is expected to return to the lineup in the next 4-6 weeks following ACL surgery, and Anthony Davis is back in the lineup after being out for a month with a calf strain.
However, the Mavericks' offensive game plan should still center on rookie Cooper Flagg.
In his last five games, Flagg has averaged 20.2 points, 7.2 rebounds and 4.4 assists, shooting 48.1 percent from the field. Despite a challenging stretch from three-point range (11.8 percent), his overall contributions have been efficient and indicative of his advanced development. He has been a stabilizing force through the young season, trying to keep the Mavericks afloat amid a big pile of injuries.
Flagg's impact grows beyond statistics. His ability to make plays for his teammates, push the pace, create mismatches and serve as a unifying force has revitalized a team still trying to find its identity. With him driving the offense, the Mavericks exhibit greater fluidity, cohesion and unpredictability—qualities that have been lacking this season.
While the return of Irving and Davis might bring back a star-driven, isolationist style, this change could hinder Flagg's development as the franchise's future key player. Davis is averaging 21.1 points, 9.9 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game in the few games he’s played for the Mavericks this season. Irving excels in movement-based plays, while Davis thrives in structured setups. Both can help improve Flagg's game without taking away his role as the primary focus.
Maintaining Flagg as the primary initiator will bolster his confidence, refine his playmaking skills and expedite his development into Dallas' next franchise player. The Mavericks find themselves in a unique situation: a generational rookie already performing at a high level, alongside two elite stars who can support his rise to stardom.
For the Mavericks' long-term success, the decision is clear. The offense should remain in Cooper Flagg's hands, as the immediate benefits are crucial to the Mavericks' future.
