Why Timberwolves will stun defending champion Nuggets with Game 7 win

We have a tremendous contest between the Minnesota Timberwolves and Denver Nuggets in what should be a fun Game 7 matchup. This series has gone back and forth and Sunday’s game should be absolutely electric. It should be a close one, but we take a look as to why the Timberwolves will stun the Nuggets in Game 7.

Beating Denver is much easier said than done as Nikola Jokic is arguably the best basketball player in the world right now. Additionally, the Nuggets are well-coached and know what it takes to win a championship. So, Minnesota is going to have their hands full.

When it comes down to it there are three factors that can help the Timberwolves on Sunday night. Minnesota would benefit from one of their key rotational players having a big game. Additionally, the Timberwolves can pull off the upset by making it tough for Jamal Murray. And lastly, Anthony Edwards could be in for the biggest game of his life.

Why Timberwolves will upset Nuggets

Naz Reid steps up big

Naz Reid Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Naz Reid won the NBA’s Sixth-Man of the Year Award and has been phenomenal throughout the playoffs. He played excellent defense against Nikola Jokic when Rudy Gobert was unavailable. On top of that, Reid is a dangerous three-point shooter who can keep the Timberwolves in the mix all night.

A big performance from Reid would go a long way for Minnesota. He can serve as a compliment to Anthony Edwards and Karl-Anthony Towns. That would help the Timberwolves a ton as they hope to advance in the NBA Playoffs. With that said, look for Naz Reid to step up in Game 7, as he could be the X-Factor his team needs to pull off the upset.

Timberwolves shut down Jamal Murray

Jamal Murray is listed as questionable heading into this contest. However, considering it’s a win or go home situation it’s hard to imagine Murray not playing. He didn’t play all that well in Game 6. So, the Timberwolves are probably preparing a similar game plan to slow down the Nuggets’ superstar point guard.

Focusing on slowing down Murray makes sense considering Minnesota hasn’t been able to stop Nikola Jokic. Removing Jokic’s right-hand man could be enough to take down the Nuggets. It would force Jokic into isolation and he’d suddenly be playing against the Timberwolves without superstar help.

Anthony Edwards goes ballistic

Anthony Edwards Brad Rempel-USA TODAY Sports

Anthony Edwards has been an absolute stud throughout the playoffs. He looks like the future face of the league at just 22 years old. Minnesota must continue leaning on Edwards, especially now in a Game 7 matchup. So far throughout the playoffs, Edwards is averaging 30.2 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 5.8 assists per game.

But for the Timberwolves to advance they’ll need Anthony Edwards to be at his best. He has the tools to light it up from anywhere on the court. On top of that, it seems like he has a similar mindset to the game as Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant. If that’s the case, Minnesota is in good hands for the long haul. But considering it’s a Game 7 matchup we could be in for an all-time performance from Anthony Edwards.
