Why Utah Jazz’s Dejounte Murray 2024 Deadline Pursuit Failed, Per NBA Trade Rumor
Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports

Atlanta Hawks guard Dejounte Murray was among the chief topics ahead of the 2024 NBA trade deadline, with the Utah Jazz said to be among those who thought about trading for him.

However, that simply did not happen, with the deadline lapsing without a trade involving the talented two-way guard. But it was not for the lack of trying, it seems. Ben Anderson of KSL Sports said that the Utah Jazz were on Murray but rejected a Hawks proposal that would have them giving up guard Keyonte George (h/t James Hansen of SLC Dunk).

“I will tell you that there was some talk about Dejounte Murray to the Jazz at the trade deadline and it was going to cost the Jazz Keyonte George and the Jazz said no.”

Of course, it can’t just be George whom the Jazz had to send to the Hawks for Murray under that said offer, but the former Baylor Bears guard must have been the biggest asset in the package.

Drafted 16th overall by the Jazz in the first round of the 2023 NBA Draft, George averaged 13.0 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game in his rookie season.

He shot just 39.1 percent from the field and only 33.4 percent from behind the arc, but he’s someone the Jazz appear to be willing to develop rather than give up on midway through his first NBA calendar year.

Dejounte Murray’s Future With the Atlanta Hawks Amid Latest Utah Jazz Revelation

As for Murray, he’s finding his name in trade conversations again (just like Trae Young) with the summer coming right up. He has three more guaranteed years on his contract, excluding a player option worth $31.50 million for the 2027-28 NBA season.

The Hawks also hold the rights for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, so that could have an influence on whatever plan Atlanta has on Murray, who averaged 22.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 6.4 assists while shooting 45.9 percent from the floor across 78 games played.
