The Dallas Mavericks are back at home on Wednesday night, as they welcome the New York Knicks to the American Airlines Center. There are a lot of big names on the injury report for both teams, though, which could impact how this game ends up.
It starts with Jalen Brunson, who has missed the last two games for the Knicks with a sprained right ankle. Since he left the Mavs to sign with the Knicks in the 2022 offseason, he's only played against his former team three times, but his 26.7 PPG average against them is the most he has against any team.
Brunson has been upgraded to questionable for this game, but the betting line seems to think that he still won't play.
Meanwhile, Anthony Davis has missed the last nine games for the Dallas Mavericks with a low-grade calf strain, and this will be his tenth. Dallas ruled him out for another 7-10 days over the weekend before he's re-evaluated again. It's been a long recovery for Davis, considering that he was pushing to play against the Washington Wizards ten days ago. Nico Harrison was also pushing for him to return, which is why he's no longer the team's general manager.
The Dallas Mavericks were missing every major piece of their center rotation on Monday night against the Minnesota Timberwolves, arguably the worst team to be missing those pieces. Dereck Lively II (right knee injury management) and Daniel Gafford (right ankle injury management) missed that game after playing on the first night of the back-to-back against Portland. They've both been upgraded to probable for this matchup, and they'll need them against Karl-Anthony Towns and Mitchell Robinson.
Dallas is still without guards Kyrie Irving (left knee ACL surgery recovery) and Dante Exum (right knee injury management), who have both yet to play this season. Either one would be great to have, but they've been super quiet about what's going on with Exum, and Irving is still probably at least a month away from returning.
Cooper Flagg is listed on the injury report with a right thumb splint, but he is available. This injury seems to be impacting his free-throw shooting, as he's just 12 of his last 22 from the line after starting the year 24/24. The Mavericks will also miss Ryan Nembhard.
The Knicks will be missing OG Anunoby with a left hamstring strain. He suffered the injury on Monday against the Miami Heat, just five minutes in.
