Will notable offseason change push Luka Doncic back into MVP conversation?

Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Doncic has been paying more attention to what he eats this offseason.

Doncic, 26, has already lost "significant weight" this offseason and has adopted a stricter diet and cardio regimen, via Dan Woike of The Athletic. The guard — listed at 6-foot-6 and 230 pounds during the 2024-25 season — looked thinner in an X post by Real Madrid's basketball club in May.

With Doncic taking the offseason more seriously, could that help him win his first MVP? As of Tuesday, FanDuel Sportsbook gives him the third-best MVP odds (+750) behind Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (+260) and Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic (+220).

Doncic's conditioning has been a concern throughout his career. In February, ESPN's Dave McMenamin reported Doncic's weight got up into the high 260s early in the season. When he sprained his right wrist in November, Doncic missed five games and used the extended absence to start focusing on his training. He needed a similar break during the 2022-23 season.

In a story published Feb. 26, The Athletic's Sam Amick reported his weight was a "frequent source of frustration" for team officials. Still, it hasn't prevented him from becoming one of the better players in the NBA.

In seven seasons with the Mavericks and Lakers, Doncic has made five All-Star Games and earned five first-team All-NBA nods. He also finished third in MVP voting during the 2023-24 season.

He missed 32 regular-season games this season because of the aforementioned wrist injury and a left calf strain but still produced elite numbers. He averaged 28.2 points, 8.2 rebounds and 7.7 assists per game.

Now that he's reportedly in better shape, envision what he could do this upcoming season.
