Who said top teams don’t struggle? They do, but more with their success rather than otherwise

Just look at the San Antonio Spurs. The second-seeded team in the tough Western Conference could very well be without Victor Wembanyama on Wednesday night as they host the Portland Trail Blazers, with the franchise star earlier listed as doubtful due to a rib contusion.

However, as per the latest update, the Spurs have ruled out Wemby against the Trailblazers.

Wembanyama suffered the injury during Monday’s 115-102 win over the Philadelphia 76ers after a mid-game collision with Paul George.

Though he played just 16 minutes before being ruled out for the second half. While initial concern surrounded the setback, follow-up imaging brought relief, as there is no structural damage, and the issue is being treated as soreness.

Despite that positive update, San Antonio appears unwilling to rush its cornerstone back into action. With a 60-19 record and a top-two seed in the Western Conference already secured, the Spurs have little incentive to take risks this close to the postseason.

However, there is an important subplot. The 22-year-old still needs to log at least 20 minutes in one of the final three regular-season games to meet the 65-game threshold required for major awards eligibility.

Given his MVP-caliber campaign that consists of 24.8 points, 11.5 rebounds, and a league-leading 3.1 blocks per game, expect the team to manage his return strategically, potentially targeting later matchups.

Additionally, San Antonio’s injury report also lists Stephon Castle as doubtful with knee soreness, while David Jones García remains out for the season. The Spurs’ depth has helped mitigate absences, with younger contributors stepping into larger roles down the stretch.

Spurs Face Difficult Victor Wembanyama Decision

The San Antonio Spurs find themselves balancing short-term caution with long-term stakes as Victor Wembanyama deals with a rib contusion late in the season.

While an MRI returned clean, confirming no structural damage, the team put the franchise centerpiece on a day-to-day basis and later ruled him out altogether.

Still, apart from his status for the upcoming game against the Portland Trail Blazers, the dilemma, however, goes beyond availability.

Wembanyama has played 63 games this season and needs to log at least 20 minutes in one of the remaining contests to meet the 65-game threshold for major awards eligibility. That includes MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, and All-NBA honors, accolades well within reach given his dominant campaign.

San Antonio, holding a top-two seed, has little incentive to push its cornerstone prematurely. At the same time, the competitive drive to secure individual recognition adds complexity to the situation.

Ultimately, the organization must decide whether to chase accolades or protect its most valuable asset.
