The Washington Wizards gave up a major haul in their blockbuster trade for Anthony Davis. In exchange for the 10-time All-Star, the Wizards agreed to send Marvin Bagley, A.J. Johnson, Khris Middleton, two first-round picks and three second-round picks to the Dallas Mavericks. Washington also sent Malaki Branham to the Charlotte Hornets as part of the three-team deal.

In exchange, the Wizards received Davis, Dante Exum, Jaden Hardy and D’Angelo Russell from the Mavs.

Washington took a significant gamble in trading for Davis, considering the 6-foot-10 big man’s injury history. A testament to this is that Davis has yet to make his Wizards debut since his Feb. 5 trade due to a lingering finger injury.

Wizards head coach Brian Keefe spoke to reporters on Tuesday to provide an update on Davis’ road to recovery. According to Keefe, the team attempted to ramp Davis up in anticipation of a potential return this season. This did not come to fruition.

Despite Washington’s attempt to get Davis ready to come back, Keefe announced that the 33-year-old is no longer expected to play this season.

The Wizards have four more games left in the regular season. They are currently dead last in the Eastern Conference with a league-worst 17-61 record. Washington has long been eliminated from the playoffs, and this team has nothing left to play for. At this point, it makes a lot of sense to shut Davis down and just wait for next season.

Davis finished the 2025-26 season with 20 games played for the Mavs. He averaged 20.4 points on 50.6% shooting, 11.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.7 blocks in 31.3 minutes per contest.
