Like in seasons past, the Washington Wizards aren’t really projected to compete in the NBA this season. As such, the likely casualties to their struggles are two young stars – Johnny Davis and Patrick Baldwin Jr. – when the franchise chose not to exercise their options for 2025-26.

Washington is entering the 2024-25 season, aiming to rebound from a challenging previous year that saw them record the worst performance in franchise history. The organization has made significant changes, including the hiring of Brian Keefe as head coach after parting ways with Wes Unseld Jr. Notable offseason moves include acquiring veteran players Jonas Valanciunas and Malcolm Brogdon, which should bolster the team’s competitiveness.

Washington’s projected depth chart highlights an intriguing mix of established talent and promising rookies. Jordan Poole is set to lead as the starting point guard, followed by Malcolm Brogdon and Davis providing depth. The shooting guard position features Bub Carrington, Corey Kispert, and Saddiq Bey, all of whom bring unique strengths to the lineup.

At small forward, the team showcases Bilal Coulibaly alongside newcomers Kyshawn George and Patrick Baldwin Jr., Kyle Kuzma remains a key player at power forward, supported by Marvin Bagley III and Anthony Gill. The center position is anchored by Alex Sarr and Valančiūnas, with Richaun Holmes adding experience and versatility.

With a blend of youth and experience, Washington is looking to improve their standings in the Eastern Conference. The integration of new players and the development of younger talent will be crucial as they work to build a more competitive roster. Fans are hopeful that these changes will lead to a more successful season and a brighter future for the franchise. As the season unfolds, all eyes will be on the team to see how they capitalize on their revamped lineup.

Washington Wizards Decide Not To Renew 2025-26 Options for Johnny Davis and Patrick Baldwin Jr.

Due to their inability to make an impact for the team, the franchise decided not to renew their options for next season. This can be seen in an article posted on RealGM about the matter.

The Washington Wizards will not exercise the 2025-26 rookie scale team options for Patrick Baldwin Jr. and Johnny Davis. These are the fourth-year options for both Baldwin and Davis.

Baldwin and Davis will now be unrestricted free agents in the summer of 2025. The Wizards will be capped at paying them now more than the amount of their declined option in first-year salary, should the team re-sign them. For Baldwin, that is $4.4 million. For Davis, that is $6.7 million.

Washington has decided not to exercise the 2025-26 rookie scale options for Davis and Baldwin, making them unrestricted free agents in the summer of 2025. This move reflects the team’s ongoing roster reconfiguration, as they aim to create nearly $30 million in cap space for the upcoming offseason.

With this decision, Washington will only be able to offer the players their declined option amounts if they choose to re-sign them. The organization is clearly focused on building for the future as they navigate their rebuilding phase.
