Wizards’ Media Day Shows an Encouraging Path for the Future

2024 No. 2 overall pick Alex Sarr noted shot selection and getting shots at the rim as a point of focus. While Sarr showed plenty of flashes as a defender and passer, if he can score more efficiently, it would drastically change the trajectory of his development and the Wizards’ frontcourt.

Bilal Coulibaly noted his handle, shooting, and aggressiveness as traits he needs to improve on. Couibaly is a good defender, but has lacked as a scorer, though he had some good shooting games in EuroBasket before his thumb injury.

Tre Johnson has continually emphasized his defense and the need for more effort on that end throughout this summer. AJ Johnson put on weight and worked on his on- and off-ball shooting. Bub Carrington focused specifically on getting to the rim and finishing more efficiently.

Veteran Leadership

CJ McCollum and Khris Middleton have been amazing as leaders since arriving in Washington. While neither player is involved in the long-term plans of the team, both can play at very respectable levels, even at this point in their careers, and have treated the organization very well.

McCollum has already tried taking Tre Johnson under his wing and helping him personally. Johnson can use McCollum as a player to learn a lot from, as both are similar scorers.

Having three useful veterans in Middleton, McCollum, and Anthony Gill is also a much-needed breath of fresh air. This is a young roster primarily focused on development, not short-term success. Some of the players over the last few years, with zero disrespect to Jordan Poole, weren’t focused on the organization’s future.

Tre Johnson

Media day was centered around Tre Johnson. Nearly every Wizards player had emphatically mentioned Johnson in their press conference, and there was nothing but praise coming from his teammates. Players continually preached how much of a gym rat the former Longhorn is.

In nearly every practice clip Tre Johnson is featured in, he is dominating. Johnson is draining shots and notably getting to the rim, disproving what many scouts were scared of.

The front office and coaching staff are in love with Johnson. Even opposing players like Kevin Durant are helping Johnson out.

Of course, fans and the team won’t truly know anything until Johnson plays real NBA minutes, but there hasn’t been a Wizard this widely praised and hyped up for a while. Tre Johnson is a player to get excited about.
