The Washington Wizards have been fighting through some injuries as the season comes to a close. Sophomores Alex Sarr and Kyshawn George have been battling injuries since the All-Star Break. Wizards star point guard Trae Young was playing on a minutes restriction before reaggravating his quadriceps, and others like Tre Johnson and Bilal Coulibaly have missed substantial time as well.
One of the most notable names on the list, 10-time NBA All-Star Anthony Davis, has yet to make his debut due to ligament damage in his left hand. On Tuesday, the Wizards gave fans an update on the star’s injury, and it is a fine mix of good and bad news.
After trading for Davis right before the deadline, Washington immediately came out to say the big man would not be debuting this season. Then, right before the All-Star Break, Wizards General Manager Will Dawkins said he believed Davis would debut before the end of the regular season. However, with Washington playing their last game in 11 days, Davis’ debut could be right at the finish line.
In a recent post on X, Washington said the five-time All-NBA selection is progressing on schedule and has finally been cleared for light contact as he slowly returns to on-court activities.

While his rehab is on schedule, Wizards fans may have to wait until the beginning of the next season to see their newest star in action. It’s unfortunate, but putting Davis at risk for another injury in the coming weeks could spell disaster for a team so close to competing for a deep postseason run. He’s progressing well, but Davis would need to ramp up his on-court activity extremely quickly if he wants to debut in one of Washington’s last seven games.
That’s not to say he has no chance at debuting this season. Going from light contact to full speed five-on-five is tough in under two weeks, but it is possible. If everything goes well and the 2020 champion has no setbacks, we could see him make his debut for his third team in two seasons.
The most important question here is, should Davis make his debut before the season ends? After all, the young guys are losing while improving. Why risk the health of the future Hall of Famer for some extra clicks or TV time? With the star’s injury history, why should the front office push for him to debut this season? It may be better to play this safely to avoid the risk of yet another blow to Washington’s rebuild.
Davis has played in just 20 games this season due to multiple injuries with the Dallas Mavericks. His career has been derailed due to the injury bug that’s wrapped around several players in the last few seasons. Since joining the Los Angeles Lakers in the summer of 2019, Davis has only had one season in which he played over 60 games. His injury history is one of the longest in the league, and the Wizards’ front office must take extra precaution to protect both Davis and the team’s long-term interest and immediate postseason aspirations.
Just a few seasons ago, Davis looked to become the franchise centerpiece in Los Angeles for the Lakers in the post-LeBron James era. However, once the injuries grew too much, the Lakers shipped him to Dallas for the generational talent that is Luka Doncic. Now, after less than a full calendar year with the Mavericks, Davis finds himself playing for a franchise that hasn’t seen the postseason since Russell Westbrook was still averaging triple-doubles, leading the team to an eighth seed in 2021.
It’s great to see that Davis is progressing on schedule, with no major setbacks reported. With that being said, the Wizards still shouldn’t feel pressured to put him on the court this season. Prioritize his health, not TV time. If the front office plays it safe, Washington could get a version of Davis the league hasn’t seen in a long time. That alone should make them consider playing the long game, avoiding risks while reaping big rewards once the 2026-27 season starts.
