On Sunday, the Washington Wizards finally made a much-needed roster decision. While there were certainly a few candidates to receive the waiver request, one player was heavily rumored to be on the chopping block: 2024 first-round pick Dillon Jones, who was cut right on time.
With the pressure off to make roster changes, the Wizards now sit at 15 players and are ready to start the season strong. Jones, who the Oklahoma City Thunder traded to Washington in June, will now enter free agency before the Wizards season tips off on Oct. 22 (h/t Wizards PR).
Despite a commendable college career, Jones didn’t show much in his first season with the Thunder. The Weber State product appeared in 54 games for the 2025 champs, and never really proved he belonged in the NBA. In 10.2 minutes per contest, he averaged 2.5 points, 1.1 assists, and 2.2 rebounds per game. Not only was volume his paltry, he shot under 40% from the field and a horrid 25.4% from 3.
Now entering the NBA’s free agent pool, Jones could see some teams to reach out to with offers. While he may not get another opportunity like the one in Washington, he still has a good outlook if a team decides to roll the dice. Entering his second season, he’s a prime candidate for a two-way deal. Jones may also be able to find a role in the G League or overseas.
Jones has potential; Washington and Oklahoma City just weren’t the right teams for his growth. In sum, he could easily find himself playing on another team by the end of the season.
As previously mentioned, after Jones clears the waivers, the Wizards reach their 15-player roster limit right before the deadline. What a relief that is for players like Justin Champagnie and Malaki Branham, who were both candidates to be released, albeit for differing reasons. This move will also free up extra minutes to players like Branham and A.J. Johnson, who otherwise would be competing with Jones at the guard slots.
Ultimately, while Washington will be a bottom-of-the-barrel team this season, Wizards fans have real hope for the future. The organization had to decide between Jones, Branham, and Champagnie for the last roster spot and made a good, educated decision.
The Wizards’ 2025-26 season begins in just under a week, and now Washington has the roster fully figured out. Yet, Jones’ cut is the first of many changes these young Wizards will endure over the season. In fact, the roster could change drastically before the 2026-27 season, with moves being made to acquire more cap space or another young prospect. While it’s often unfortunate to have to part with players, the core will need to buckle down and accept the alterations quickly.
Change can bring about the best-case or worst-case situations for a team like the Wizards.
On one hand, you’ve got the max number of players on the roster, most being young and hungry. On the flip side, those same players could feel pressure from cutting a young prospect like Jones. With the season not far out, it’ll be interesting to see how the players manage expectations for the foreseeable future.
