The Washington Wizards are going above and beyond to try to drum up support for Alex Sarr’s Rookie of the Year candidacy.

NBA reporter Marc Stein shared a photo of ice cream he received from the Wizards to promote Sarr. The enclosed letter states that the Wizards partnered with local ice cream shop Ice Cream Jubilee to create custom flavors for Sarr and fellow rookies Bub Carrington and Kyshawn George.

The campaign even includes a “Scoop the Future” logo and encourages voters to cast ballots for Sarr to win Rookie of the Year and the trio to make the NBA’s All-Rookie Team. Stein suggested he had never seen anything quite like it before.

It is hardly a surprise that NBA teams do PR work on behalf of players that are in awards contention. In general, the recognition is good for players and teams alike. The Wizards certainly went above and beyond here.

Unfortunately for the Wizards, it might take more than ice cream to get Sarr his award. The No. 2 overall pick has had a perfectly respectable season, averaging 13 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. However, Stephon Castle of the San Antonio Spurs is gaining traction as the favorite with 14.3 points per game. First overall pick Zaccharie Risacher of the Atlanta Hawks has also been impressive, and just posted a 36-point game on Sunday against Milwaukee.

You can hardly blame the Wizards. After the season they have had, they could use some good news and an award for the future of their franchise.
