At least one member of the Team USA men's basketball squad won't participate in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics due to health and safety protocols related to COVID-19.
Another could also be out.
USA Basketball confirmed Thursday that Washington Wizards star Bradley Beal will miss the Summer Games because of the previously mentioned protocols. Additionally, Jerami Grant of the Detroit Pistons was placed in the protocols "out of an abundance of caution" and is in danger of missing the tournament.
ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski and Brian Windhorst report there is "hope" Grant could clear the protocols to travel with Team USA next week. Beal's replacement should be named at some point before the squad makes that trip.
Last week, USA Select Team players Miles Bridges, P.J. Washington and Immanuel Quickley were all placed in the protocols. A Select Team player could take Beal's spot on the Olympic roster, and the ESPN personalities named both Milwaukee Bucks guard Jrue Holiday and Devin Booker of the Phoenix Suns as players expected to join the team following the ongoing NBA Finals.
