The Dallas Mavericks trading away Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers was a head-scratcher when looking at the Slovenian superstar's production.
Among players with at least 400 games, Doncic's 28.6 points-per-game average ranks third all-time in NBA history behind only Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain -- both at 30.1.
According to ESPN, Doncic's defensive mindset and conditioning were frequent concerns for the Mavericks along with his weight and commitment to a diet. Sources told ESPN that Doncic entered the season lean, but his weight "ballooned" to nearly 270 pounds early in the season.
Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards has had similar concerns, appearing before media with Chester's Hot Fries and Popeyes early in his career.
During the NBA's All-Star Weekend, a reporter asked Edwards the most he's weighed amid the rumors around Doncic's weight fluctuation.
Reporter: “Reports said Luka Doncic was 270 lbs. What’s the heaviest you’ve been, maybe in the off-season?”

"240. I hope they ain't trade me when I was 240," Edwards joked, per ClutchPoints.
Edwards has cleaned up his eating habits over the years, but had the Timberwolves traded Edwards when he was at his heaviest; they would have lost out on one of the most promising young talents in the league.
As the brightest star in his locker room, Edwards was admittedly shaken by the Mavericks trade of Doncic.
“Nobody knew about the trade, so that’s crazy,” Edwards said, per SneakerReporter. “At 25, they traded probably the best scorer in the NBA. He didn’t know about it—that’s a lot more digging somebody’s got to do to find out why he got traded. Because you don’t just trade him at 25. He just went to the Finals.
“I feel bad for Luka, man," he added. "I just saw a video on YouTube that he bought a crib in Dallas. That sucks, man. That sucks.”

As the Timberwolves are navigating a new era after trading Karl-Anthony Towns in October, which seemingly helps keep the rest of their core intact, Edwards made his plea to Timberwolves President of Basketball Operations Tim Connelly in response to the Doncic trade.
"I'm scared," Edwards said. "Tim, if you're going to trade me, let me know. If Luka can get traded, anybody can get traded at that point."
