Would Mark Cuban buy back the Dallas Mavericks? Here are the possibilities, so you can make an informed decision. Here’s what fans need to know and the potential for this actually happening.
Former majority owner and “Shark Tank” star Mark Cuban may or may not buy back the Dallas Mavericks, but it’s too early to tell. On Monday, NBA insider Marc Stein reported on X (formerly Twitter ): “BREAKING: An unidentified Dallas investor group is interested in partnering with Mark Cuban to buy the Mavericks back from Patrick Dumont, The Stein Line has learned.”
“A source close to Dumont told me, “the family remains excited about the future of the franchise and the Cooper Flagg era.” Stein’s report to X attracted ample attention, but a mixed bag of emotions. One user, Happy Hour Hoops, wrote, “If Mark Cuban pulls this off, they should try getting a player like Luka Doncic.”
Another user, Christopher Kratovil, responded, “Casino gambling is going to fail to pass, yet again, in the Texas Legislature’s upcoming January-May 2027 session. At some point, don’t the Adelsons give up on the casino-resort-arena plan?
Moreover, if they sell their interest in the Mavs, the Adelsons can participate in the NBA’s expansion franchise in their actual hometown, Las Vegas. Sell the team and head back to the gaming-friendly desert!” Whether or not you agree with the responses on Stein’s X post is your choice, but don’t hold your breath when it comes to a potential Luka Doncic reunion.
Doncic, 26, once said in an interview on the “Sundae Conversation” podcast that he wouldn’t move back to Texas after his NBA career ends. Doncic’s statement clearly shows that he moved on, and so should you.
Mark Cuban’s relationship with the Dallas Mavericks has changed significantly since he sold the Team to the Adelson family in December 2023. However, Cuban’s support for the Mavericks appears unchanged, including his vocal support for the team and its future.
Cuban, 67, is worth $6 billion, according to Forbes. He could buy back the Mavericks, but it remains unclear because he has not confirmed anything at this time. In addition, the Adelson family may not sell the team, as it is a significant investment for them, and Las Vegas Sands is attempting to build a casino in Dallas despite casino gambling remaining illegal in Texas.
For casino gambling to become legal in Texas, the Texas Constitution would need to be amended after two-thirds of the Texas legislature agreed to place the measure before Texas voters in a statewide referendum.
Until an agreement is reached and a contract is signed, nothing is finalized. For now, the Dallas Mavericks’ outlook this season should be the primary focus for fans and media alike. The Mavericks have been significantly affected by multiple injuries and persistent inconsistency on the court. The Mavericks’ top goal should be to continue rebuilding around Cooper Flagg.
