If there were questions regarding Zach LaVine’s commitment to the Chicago Bulls’ cause, they should have been put to rest by his performance on Monday against the Charlotte Hornets. The dynamic shooting guard displayed impressive defensive energy in the closing minutes of a tight game against the Charlotte Hornets, helping lead the Bulls to a close 119-112 victory.
LaVine has long been known for his scoring abilities, often dazzling fans with his athleticism and ability to score from anywhere on the court. But what may have gone unnoticed is his growth as a defender. In this game against the Hornets, LaVine was determined to stop their star player, Terry Rozier, who had been torching the Bulls all game.
Playing in only his second game since returning from a month-long absence due to a foot injury, the two-time All-Star did not shoot the ball well, making two of his eight attempts from the field, both coming from beyond the arc. He finished the game with nine points, five assists, and two blocks.
After the game, Bull coach Billy Donovan said as forgettable as the offensive showing was, LaVine’s defensive effort was the bright spot of the night. Though Rozier finished with 39 points, he went scoreless in overtime.
“I thought he defended really well,” Donovan said.
“That was really encouraging. The biggest thing that stood out to me was his defense.”
Some amount of rust is expected for a player who has not played NBA basketball for over a month. So it is no surprise that Zach LaVine struggled with his outside shooting in his second game back from the injury.
But despite the poor shooting night, LaVine showed glimpses of his usual dynamic self on both ends of the court. His ability to defend multiple positions and disrupt passing lanes was on full display, garnering praise from his coach and the media.
“If he can give us what he’s given us these two games on the defensive end of the floor with that kind of effort and that kind of work, then you know what… he’ll find his rhythm offensively,” Donovan added.
