The Oakland A's are coming up on the 20th anniversary of their last World Series victory and announced that in 2020 they will retire the number of a player who had an immense role in bringing that title to the Bay Area. 

Dave Stewart's name might not come up when fans discuss baseball's all-time great pitchers, but when it came to the postseason, few were as unhittable as Stewart. Born in Oakland, "Smoke," as he was affectionately known, was a key member of three World Series-winning teams: the 1981 Dodgers, 1989 A's and 1993 Blue Jays. He was named ALCS MVP twice and was the MVP of the 1989 World Series. 

There is a sound argument that no pitcher was ever better in the ALCS, as his career numbers in those series are as follows: 8-0 with a 2.03 ERA and 1.02 WHIP in 77 innings of work. Stewart's career numbers were never going to get him into the Hall of Fame, but he's a certified legend in Oakland and someone who rightfully deserves to have his number taken out of circulation and hung up next to the other all-time greats. 

Which brings us to today's quiz of the day. Stewart certainly won't be the first number the A's have retired. In fact, he won't even be the first No. 34 that they've retired. That would be Rollie Fingers, whose number they retired in 1993.
