Caleb Martin has the hot hand for NBA Finals Game 1

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

And just like that, we're officially set to begin the 2023 NBA Finals. After a dominant Western Conference sweep of the Los Angeles Lakers, the Denver Nuggets enter the NBA Finals well-rested, which is far from the case for their opponent, the Eastern Conference's No. 8 seed, the Miami Heat.

Ride the hot hand with an encore performance from Caleb Martin

The Heat are just three days removed from being on the fringe of being the first NBA team in history to blow a 3-0 series lead. But instead of falling in Game 7 on the road to the Boston Celtics, they put on a completely dominant performance led by Jimmy Butler and emerging star Caleb Martin. And speaking of Martin, there's no better place to start.

Let's run it back, Caleb

Martin shocked virtually all NBA fans when he was the secondary star (and at times the primary star) for the Heat against the Celtics. Butler has officially found his co-pilot, and Martin looks ready for the biggest stage of them all.

But even after posting averages of 19.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game in the seven-game series with the Celtics, there still appears to be some lack of respect put on his name.

Martin enters Game 1 of the NBA Finals against the Nuggets with points + rebounds over/under of 23.5, a mark which he blew past in each of the past two games (doing it in the scoring department alone in Game 7). The key factor here is that Martin has jumped from 30-35 minutes per game up to 40-plus, but beyond that, he's taking minutes specifically from players like Kevin Love, and doing a great job on the glass.

Martin pulled down 15 rebounds in Game 6 and 10 in Game 7. There's no reason to think he won't push double digits again, leaving somewhere in the 13- to 15-point range as a potential worst-case scenario.

Betting: Caleb Martin over 23.5 points + rebounds (-106)

In the news ...

Deshaun Watson would 'love' a reunion with DeAndre Hopkins — And the sentiment appears to go both ways. The sense from Hopkins' camp is the perennial Pro Bowl receiver would be open to joining the Browns signal-caller in Cleveland. The duo combined for 25 touchdowns during their three-year run together with the Houston Texans. Cleveland is +500 to ink Watson's former No. 1 target to a deal. The Buffalo Bills (+300) and Kansas City Chiefs (+400) remain the favorites in the Hopkins sweepstakes.

Saquon Barkley and the Giants remain in contract dispute — Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post reported Barkley and the G-Men remain "no closer than ever on an agreement." The two sides have until July 17 to reach a multiyear deal. Barkley is fresh off a career-best 1,312 yards rushing campaign and currently sits at +3300 to capture Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2024. As for the Giants, they own +600 odds to win the NFC East, a scenario that hasn't played out since 2011.

Quick Picks

1 Miami Heat @ Denver Nuggets

The Heat are a great story, but the Nuggets are a great team. Despite surviving a seven-game series against the C's, the Heat looked like a shell of themselves over the second half of the series, dropping three of their last four games. The Heat are 0-6 against Denver in their last six outings. The Nuggets are undefeated over their last 10 home games. We'll take Denver's moneyline at -360.

2 Caleb Martin over 14.34 points

After averaging just 9.6 points per game during the regular season, Caleb Martin has emerged as a reliable scoring option for the Heat during their run to the Finals. The team's third-leading scorer in the postseason, Martin averaged 19.3 points per game in the Eastern Conference Finals, scoring fewer than 15 points just once during the seven-game series. The Nuggets allowed 21 points per game to third-leading scorers in the Western Conference Finals.

Latest Odds:  -120
3 Nikola Jokic to post triple-double

What a world we live in when a starting center in the NBA is close to even money to post a triple-double in the biggest game of his life to this point. Nikola Jokic has just been that good, but more specifically, he's been a force at home in a "bet the triple-double" kind of way. Jokic has a triple-double in three straight home games and posted a 19/12/12 line against the Heat at home during the regular season while missing another triple-double on the road against them by two assists.

Latest Odds:  +100
4 Jamal Murray over 3.5 3-pointers made

Jamal Murray began the Nuggets' second-round matchup with the Phoenix Suns by draining 6-of-10 attempts from beyond the arc in Game 1. Although Murray was apparently battling an illness for much of that series, he finally appeared to feel like himself again in Game 6, knocking down 4-of-7 attempts. When Murray was back to normal to start the Western Conference Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers, he was superb from three-point range, knocking down four or more from deep in three of the team's four games. For good measure, in the Nuggets' two home games against the Lakers last series, Murray made 10-of-22 shots from three-point range with four and eight in the two games, respectively.
