MLB best bets: And the hits just keep on coming

New York Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez. Wendell Cruz-USA TODAY Sports

It's a light MLB day as we have officially reached July. While the options are limited, we've still found a few legs worth rooting on throughout the day as we get going on a new week here together.

Hittin' on some hits to jump-start the week

Jon Singleton hit

The Astros first baseman Jon Singleton is rolling of late, coming into this one on a five-game hitting streak. That's impressive, yes, but it's the eight total hits in that span (including three yesterday) that really catch our eye.

That's success at the plate we can get behind, as we've seen time and time again how streaky bats can be. Singleton has never faced off against Toronto's Yariel Rodriguez, but he hits righties far better on the season (.254 average compared to .175 vs. LHP).

We'll follow those numbers and the streaking Singleton to keep it moving.

Francisco Alvarez hit

We then head to the Mets and load up Francisco Alvarez to get back in the hit column after failing to record a hit in his last game for the first time in 10 games. Alvarez has averaged 1.6 hits per game in his last 10 games, and he's piled up 11 hits in his past six on the road.

Washington starter Mackenzie Gore has allowed 28 hits in his past four home starts, so expect New York to jump on him early.

Together, this duo to each log a base knock comes in at +159 on DraftKings.

In the news ...

Paul George signs with 76ers; NBA free agency begins — The headlining move of the day to kick-start NBA free agency has been Paul George leaving the Clippers to join the Philadelphia 76ers on a new four-year deal. George now joins 2023 MVP Joel Embiid and rising star Tyrese Maxey, who just signed a massive extension of his own, to form a new Big 3 in Philly. Just yesterday, the Sixers were +1200 to win the NBA Finals next season. After signing George, those odds have jumped to +800. Other intriguing moves of note thus far: the Thunder have added big-man Isaiah Hartenstein to shore up their rebounding, the Spurs have added Chris Paul, and Klay Thompson was waived by Golden State. By this afternoon, we're sure more moves will have been announced.

Start of NHL free agency: Jake Guentzel to Tampa and Nashville getting aggressive — After trading for Jake Guentzel at the deadline, it seemed things weren't trending in the right direction, so the Carolina Hurricanes traded his rights to Tampa Bay for a third-round pick. That move gave the Lightning 24 hours to come to an agreement with the star winger, and that they did, inking Guentzel to a monster nine-year contract. That's the big news out of the market, but plenty of more dominos have started to fall. Sam Reinhart agreed to remain a Florida Panther on a new eight-year contract, and Tyler Bertuzzi signed with Chicago. Nashville may have stolen the day in free agency, signing a pair of Cup winners in Steven Stamkos and Jonathan Marchessault. The Predators were +3500 to win next year’s title this morning and now sit at +2500.

Quick Picks

1 David Peterson over 4.5 Ks

David Peterson has had some big K outings of late, piling up 14 in his past two starts in his first two games of the year going for 100+ pitches. Washington has shown themselves to be strikeout-prone against lefties on the year, so we'll load up a solid Peterson outing here in the K prop market.

Latest Odds:  -120
2 Bryse Wilson over 3.5 Ks

Wilson is over this number in four straight and now faces a Rockies team that fans at the third-highest rate against RHP this season. Wilson may not be much of a strikeout pitcher, but he should get enough work to hit this mark tonight.

Latest Odds:  -165
3 Connecticut Sun @ Phoenix Mercury

We're leaning on a tight one here, as both sides have gotten better play from their defense of late, and no team plays a slower brand of basketball right now than Connecticut. As such, we're on under 157.5 points in this one.

4 Dallas Wings @ Seattle Storm

Dallas has been the league's worst team over the last 10 games, going 1-9 and sitting on a horrid -13.5 net-rating. Seattle, meanwhile, has been the WNBA's third-best team in that same stretch. That makes our choice relatively simple here, back the Storm -11.5.
