Golf best bets: Rain will likely reign at the Wyndham

Stormy conditions are no problem for Shane Lowry, who went low in three of his four rounds at the British Open through high winds and rain. Jack Gruber-USA TODAY Sports

The PGA Tour makes its final stop of the regular season this week at Sedgefield Country Club for the Wyndham Championship. It's going to be a rainy weekend in Greensboro, N.C., but soft conditions will actually help some players score on this short golf course.

With Round 1 of the Wyndham Championship set to begin (hopefully) on Thursday morning, let's target a two-pack of score props on established veterans.

Lucas Glover Round 1 score under 69.5 (-120 FanDuel)

Glover missed the cut at the Genesis Scottish Open and the British Open in his last two starts, but a return to Sedgefield might be just what he needs to get back on track. The 44-year-old won the Wyndham Championship last year with rounds of 66, 64, 62 and 68. He also had the second-best putting week of the entire season that week, so he clearly loves these Bermuda greens.

Sedgefield has been kind to older, shorter hitters over the years because it emphasizes accuracy over length, and that's exactly how Glover will attack this golf course again.

Shane Lowry Round 1 score under 68.5 (-110 FD)

Stormy conditions are no problem for Lowry, who went low in three of his four rounds at the British Open through high winds and rain. The Irishman is extremely accurate from off the tee and is one of the best iron players on the PGA Tour. He's going to keep the ball in the fairway and attack pins with the soft greens at Sedgefield, so we just need a decent putting day for him to go under this line.

In the news ...

Team USA men's basketball cruises past Brazil to reach Olympic semifinals — The domination for Team USA continued in the quarterfinal round with a 122-87 win against Brazil. Devin Booker led the way with 18 points, Anthony Edwards added 17 points off the bench and Joel Embiid racked up 14 points and seven rebounds in only 12 minutes before sitting the second half. The Americans are -16.5 against Nikola Jokic and Serbia in the semifinals of the Paris Olympics.

White Sox finally snap historic losing streak against Athletics — Stop the presses. The Chicago White Sox have won a baseball game. Chicago was tied with the 1988 Baltimore Orioles for the longest losing streak in American League history (21), but history will have to wait a little longer after its 5-1 win against the Oakland Athletics Tuesday night. The longest losing streak in the modern era is 23 by the 1961 Philadelphia Phillies. The 28-88 White Sox have a live win total of 39.5.

Framber Valdez gives up two-out home run in the ninth to spoil no-hitter — Valdez was one out away from polishing off his second career no-hitter on Tuesday night. That was before Corey Seager stepped up to the plate with two down in the ninth inning and blasted a two-run home run to spoil history. The Houston Astros held on to beat the Texas Rangers, 4-2, but Valdez wishes it ended differently. Houston is +900 to win the American League.

Quick Picks

1 Chicago White Sox @ Athletics

Congrats to the White Sox for finally getting a win, but we're going right back to fading them on Wednesday. Davis Martin has surrendered five earned runs and six walks in 6.1 innings of work, while Joey Estes has been pitching well with two earned runs or fewer in four straight appearances. We'll take the A's -1.5.

White Sox
+1.5 (-125) +160 > 8.5 (-110)
Athletics
-1.5 (+110) -180 < 8.5 (-105)
2 Michael King under 1.5 earned runs allowed

King has been on fire of late, as the San Diego Padres starter has given up only 16 hits and six earned runs over his last five starts. The Pirates are batting just .228 with a .627 OPS and a 76 wRC+ against righties since the All-Star break.

Latest Odds:  +110
3 Eddie Rosario under 0.5 hits

Rosario is struggling at the plate right now with a .103 batting average and a .322 OPS over the last 15 days, and this isn't a great matchup for him to break out of his funk. In 11 career plate appearances against Freddy Peralta, Rosario has no hits and six strikeouts.

Latest Odds:  +110
4 Boston Red Sox @ Kansas City Royals

This is a huge pitching mismatch between Cole Ragans and Kutter Crawford. Ragans has given up a .139 xBA and a .163 xwOBA against current Red Sox hitters in his career, while Crawford has surrendered 16 earned runs and a whopping 12 homers in his last 15.0 innings of work. Let's jump on the Royals -0.5 in the first five innings.

5 Philadelphia Phillies @ Los Angeles Dodgers

Let's fade both starting pitchers in this matchup. Gavin Stone has given up at least seven hits and four earned runs in four of his last five starts, and Tyler Phillips got shelled for eight earned runs and three homers in his last outing. Give us the over 8.5.
