Presidents Cup looks to be colored red, white, and blue

Chris Day/The Commercial Appeal / USA TODAY NETWORK

It's a beautiful section of the sports calendar with football season in full swing and MLB playoffs approaching, but let's take a quick break from the mayhem to hit the links. Team USA and Team International will face off this week in the 2024 Presidents Cup, an event the Americans have dominated over the years with a 12-1-1 record. There isn't any value in the outright market because Team USA is so likely to win, so let's dive deeper down the board and target some fun props for the Presidents Cup.

How to bet the Presidents Cup

Day 2 winner: USA (-145 DraftKings)

Day 2 of the Presidents Cup will feature five foursomes matches, otherwise known as alternate shot. Well, Team USA has crushed in this format over the years. According to Justin Ray of The Athletic, the Americans have outscored the Internationals, 56.5-23.5, in the foursomes format since 2007. Team USA went 6-3 in alternate shot two years ago, and many of those duos will be back in action this year.

Scottie Scheffler-Sam Burns, Patrick Cantlay-Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa-Wyndham Clark and Max Homa-Tony Finau are a few potential pairings for foursomes. Team International might not be able to put a single duo together that would be favored over any of those four. The Americans should roll in foursomes once again.

Top USA Captain's Pick: Tony Finau (+550 DK)

Jim Furyk pegged Homa, Burns, Brian Harman, Keegan Bradley, Russell Henley and Finau as his six captain's picks for this year's Presidents Cup, and we're not sure why Finau is such an underdog in this market. The veteran is 3-2-3 in two career appearances at the Presidents Cup, including a 3-1-1 mark in 2022. His only loss came when he was paired up with Kevin Kisner, who's already transitioning from the golf course to the booth.

Burns is favored in this market because he'll likely be paired with his best friend, Scheffler, but that duo hasn't had much success in international competition. One poor showing and Burns could hit the bench for most of the competition. Homa isn't in good form, and Harman and Henley likely won't play major roles in their first career Presidents Cup appearances. Furyk will trust Finau's experience and hopefully roll him out for four or five sessions this week.

In the news ...

Astros clinch AL West, Padres and Orioles lock up playoff spots — The MLB playoffs are almost here, and we're starting to get a sense of what the postseason field will look like. On Tuesday night, the Houston Astros beat the Seattle Mariners to clinch their seventh American League West title in the last eight seasons. Elsewhere around MLB, the San Diego Padres and Baltimore Orioles won to secure wild-card spots in their respective leagues. They're all still looking up at the Los Angeles Dodgers, which are +350 favorites to win the World Series.

Aces, Liberty advance to set up star-studded WNBA semis — Get your popcorn ready, WNBA fans. The Las Vegas Aces and the New York Liberty, the two biggest favorites to win the WNBA title this season, have advanced to face off against each other in the semifinals. The best-of-five series will begin on Sunday, with the Liberty currently holding as a 4.5-point home favorite in Game 1. New York is a -158 favorite to beat the Aces and advance to the WNBA Finals.

Chargers dealing with multiple key injuries with Chiefs on deck — The AFC West battle between the 3-0 Kansas City Chiefs and the 2-1 Los Angeles Chargers should be one of the premier games of the Week 4 slate, but injuries are putting a damper on the divisional matchup. The Chargers will likely be without starting tackles Joe Alt (MCL sprain) and Rashawn Slater (strained pectoral). Plus, Justin Herbert (high-ankle sprain) and Joey Bosa (hip injury) might not be able to suit up in Week 4, and Derwin James has already been ruled out due to a suspension. Because of all the uncertainty in Los Angeles, the Chiefs have moved out to an 8.5-point favorite on Sunday.

Quick Picks

1 Luis L. Ortiz over 1.5 walks allowed

Ortiz has surrendered at least two walks in four straight starts and has a walk rate of 18.6 percent against current Milwaukee Brewers hitters. That's no surprise considering the Brewers have the second-lowest swing rate and the third-lowest chase rate in MLB this season.

Latest Odds:  -155 DK
2 Juan Soto over 1.5 hits + runs + RBIs

Soto isn't swinging a hot bat right now, but that's giving us a discount on this prop in a great matchup. In 40 career plate appearances against Zach Eflin, Soto is batting .500 and slugging .794 with two home runs and four doubles.

Latest Odds:  -115 DK
3 Toronto Blue Jays team total over 4.5

Boston Red Sox starter Richard Fitts hasn't given up a run through his first three MLB starts, but he has a xERA of 3.78 because he isn't forcing many swings and misses. These hard-hit balls are going to find the gaps at some point, and Boston's bullpen has been one of the worst in the league in the second half.

Latest Odds:  +114 FD
4 New York Mets @ Atlanta Braves

This has the feel of a heated playoff series, as the Mets and Braves are fighting for a wild-card spot in the National League. Chris Sale hasn't given up more than two earned runs since June 1, and David Peterson has held current Braves hitters to a .188 batting average in 109 plate appearances. Give us the under 7.5.

5 St. Louis Cardinals @ Colorado Rockies

This total is too low for a Coors Field game with two below-average pitchers. Austin Gomber has given up 23 hits and 11 runs in his last 14.0 innings of work at home, while current Rockies hitters have a .394 xBA and a /427 xwOBA against Erick Fedde. We'll take the over 10.
