NBA parlay: These 'dogs are barkin'

The NBA is back, baby! After enjoying a tasty appetizer on opening night, we have a loaded slate of 10 games on the platter for Wednesday night. Although we haven't seen any of these teams yet, now is the time to take some shots considering sportsbooks don't know how to power rate them yet.

Let's take advantage of the uncertainty and target three NBA underdogs to win outright.

NBA openers: Who let the dogs out?

Detroit Pistons moneyline (+170 DraftKings)

This is a classic example of selling high on a popular team and buying low on an up-and-coming squad. The Indiana Pacers are coming off a fluky Eastern Conference Finals appearance, while the Pistons were an NBA-worst 14-68 last season.

We're expecting a big jump from Detroit this year after a strong offseason. The Pistons brought in veterans Tobias Harris, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Malik Beasley to help out this young core led by Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duran, and J.B. Bickerstaff is a huge upgrade at head coach. The Pacers are vulnerable to upsets because they play fast and don't care about defense, so we'll take a shot on a much-improved Detroit roster.

Philadelphia 76ers moneyline (+145 Bet365)

Yes, we're aware Joel Embiid and Paul George won't be suiting up on Wednesday night. Those announcements flipped this spread all the way to Milwaukee Bucks -3.5, and we're willing to buy back on the move.

The 76ers are more than capable of putting up points against a Bucks defense that struggled to contain guards last year. Tyrese Maxey is ready to take the next step to superstardom, and that starts Wednesday night. Philadelphia added Eric Gordon, Caleb Martin and Guerschon Yabusele in the offseason and upgraded at backup center by bringing back Andre Drumond. This team won't be completely lost without Embiid like they've been in previous year.

Orlando Magic moneyline (+116 FanDuel)

We're high on the Magic and low on the Miami Heat entering the season, so of course we like Orlando as an underdog in this matchup. These two teams approach the regular season very differently. The Magic are going to be locked in defensively night in and night out under head coach Jamahl Mosley.

Orlando added some much-needed shooting with Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and we're excited to see the jumps Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner and Jalen Suggs have made. The Magic are the better team here.

If you're feeling frisky, you can parlay these three dogs for +1277 at FanDuel.

In the news ...

Celtics dismantle Knicks; Lakers handle Timberwolves on NBA opening night — The NBA is officially back, but the league didn't provide much drama on opening night. The reigning champion Boston Celtics dominated the New York Knicks from the opening tip and cruised to a 132-109 victory. The Celtics made 29 threes to tie the NBA single-game record, and Jayson Tatum led the way with 37 points and 10 assists. In the Western Conference, the Los Angeles Lakers knocked off the Minnesota Timberwolves, 110-103, thanks to Anthony Davis 36 points and 16 rebounds. Bronny James made his NBA debut and missed the only shot he took in the second quarter. The Celtics are +140 to win the East, while the Lakers are +1400 to win the West.

Chiefs trade for DeAndre Hopkins — As if Patrick Mahomes and the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs weren't good enough already, the reigning Super Bowl champions traded a conditional fourth-round pick to the Tennessee Titans for Hopkins on Wednesday morning. Kansas City is missing Rashee Rice, Marquise Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster, so Hopkins will immediately step in as Mahomes' WR1. The Chiefs are +400 to three-peat.

Rams shopping Cooper Kupp ahead of trade deadline — Wide receivers have dominated the NFL trade market this season, and they might not be done switching teams. The Los Angeles Rams are reportedly making calls about trading Kupp for a second-round pick ahead of the Nov. 5 trade deadline. Kupp is expected to play on Thursday night for the first time since Week 2, but it could be the last time he suits up in L.A. The Rams are +850 to win the NFC West.

Quick Picks

1 Gradey Dick to score 15+ points

The Toronto Raptors need to see what they have in their young players, and we saw that in the preseason when Dick led the team in field-goal attempts (14.2) and three-point attempts (7.0) per game. The Kansas product could be a bigger piece of this offense than sportsbooks expect.

Latest Odds:  +105
2 Liberty Flames @ Kennesaw State Owls

Liberty hasn't been the juggernaut we expected to see entering the season, and they've played only once in the last 32 days due to a canceled game against Appalachian State. Give us Kennesaw State +26 in what could be a rusty performance from the Flames.

Latest Odds:  Kennesaw State +26
3 Memphis Grizzlies @ Utah Jazz

The Grizzlies should play a more up-tempo style of basketball with Ja Morant back in the lineup, and the Jazz ranked 29th in the NBA in defensive efficiency last year. Zach Edey is an over bettor's dream because he'll score easy buckets and get roasted in pick-and-roll defense. Give us the over 228.

Grizzlies
-2 (-112) -135 > 228 (-110)
Jazz
+2.5 (-110) +120 < 228 (-105)
4 Phoenix Suns @ Los Angeles Clippers

This could be a long night for the Clippers without Kawhi Leonard on the court. The Suns should be able to put up a big number with their healthy, refreshed trio of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal, and the Clippers don't have the offensive firepower to keep up. We'll take the Suns -4.5.
