When Tarik Skubal was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 29th round of the 2017 MLB draft (he elected to return to Seattle University and was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the ninth round in 2018), Chris Sale was already pitching in his eighth MLB season. Now, they’re forever linked in history as 2024 Cy Young Award winners. Skubal led the Detroit Tigers to their first playoff appearance since 2014 with a 2.39 ERA and 228 strikeouts in 192 innings to officially entrench himself as one of the best pitchers in baseball. Meanwhile, the 35-year-old Sale enjoyed a career resurgence in his first season with the Atlanta Braves. He made his most starts in a season since 2017 and dropped his ERA from 4.30 in 2023 to 2.38, before getting injured just ahead of the postseason.
Which brings us to today’s quiz. Both Sale and Skubal won the pitching triple crown in their leagues, posting the best ERA while recording the most wins and strikeouts. With that being said, can you name every Cy Young Award winner since 2000?
Good luck!
