The Boston Red Sox signed J.D. Martinez late in the winter offseason, and the move has proved to be the final touch for a team that, when it’s all said and done, may rival some of the greatest teams in baseball history. The veteran slugger was brought to New England to add some thump to the middle of their offensive attack, and while he’s certainly done that, he’s so vastly exceeded expectations it is difficult to really convey his impact.
The 31-year-old is currently hitting .331 with 40 home runs, which puts him in elite Red Sox company, and he has already set a career high with 121 RBI, which leads all of baseball. He trails only teammate Mookie Betts (.342) in batting average and sits only one big fly behind Oakland’s Khris Davis in homers, giving him a legitimate opportunity to win the first global Triple Crown since Mickey Mantle in 1956. If it weren't for the aforementioned Betts, Martinez would easily be the unanimous choice for AL MVP. Even with the season Betts is having, if Martinez is able to replicate Mantle, he would have to make some room on his mantel regardless.
Which brings us to today's quiz of the day. What has been perhaps the most impressive aspect of Martinez’s 2018 season is that he’s been far from just a home run hitter. As of Monday night, his 172 hits are tied with Atlanta’s Nick Markakis for the MLB lead. So with that in mind, how many of the MLB leaders in hits since the 1988 season can you name in five minutes?
Good luck!
