Most of the excitement of this baseball offseason centers around the free-agent status of two of the premier players in the sport: Bryce Harper and Manny Machado. The latter is undeniably one of the top stars in the game, but he also comes with his own share of question marks, to say the least.

The 26-year-old has hit over 33 homers in four consecutive years, while missing only nine games in that period, and owns a lifetime .282 batting average. But he also has a reputation for not playing the game the "right way" and has drawn the ire of countless opposing players due to supposedly dirty play. At least one prominent team has decided to stay away from him this winter, and it will be interesting to see how many others do as well.

Despite that, talent wins out in virtually every sport, and there is no doubt Machado is about to get paid, more than likely, overly so. The organization that will sign his checks next season remains very much a mystery though. The Yankees have sent mixed signals, with owner Hal Steinbrenner acknowledging some of the baggage with Machado is cause for concern, while other reports indicate the Bombers are very much involved. Both the Phillies and White Sox have money to spend and have made their interest in both Machado and Harper well known. While the Mets could clearly use a hitter of Machado’s caliber, they’re reportedly not interested, because, well, they’re the Mets. Regardless, expect both Machado and Harper to secure contracts upward of $300 million this winter.
