10 Lions who stood out the most during the first week of training camp in good ways and bad ways

The Detroit Lions completed the first week of training camp last week, and what a week it was. From bad injury news to Dan Campbell having to pause camp multiple times because guys were being too physical, to the pads going on, and Jameson Williams getting his helmet knocked off from a hit almost immediately. It was fun. The big question after the first week is, who stood out the most? Well, here are the guys that really caught my eye in the first week:

Good ways

Aidan Hutchinson
It's time to stop asking this guy about the leg injury and if it's holding him back and how he's responding to it, and what not. If we saw anything in the first week, it was that Hutchinson is not being held back by the injury he had last year. He looked exactly like he did in camp last year, like a really good player. Lions defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard actually thinks he looks better, and that wasn't just lip service to fans who are worried.

Dominic Lovett
I really did not expect much from this kid, and he wowed me in the first week. Lovett's speed out there really shows up, especially as a gunner. He was flying by players in drills, and nobody could touch him. He made it look easy. Now we're going to see what he can do as a return man, and he has a chance to really stake his claim to a roster spot if he keeps showing up on special teams the way he has.

Jameson Williams
This could be a huge season for him. Every day, you see that maturation on the field. He no longer looks like a kid who has unbelievable athletic skill, but doesn't know how to fully harness it. He looks like an adult who can not only harness it but maybe even teach other players how to harness theirs. It's just a 180 for him. Plus, he looks to have bulked up a little. He could be a real problem for defenses this year.

Kyle Allen
Another guy I did not expect a whole lot from this summer, but he's been solid with the second team so far. The best word to describe him is clean. He's just not making mistakes. Maybe safe is another word to use for him. I really want to see how he does on Thursday before I start thinking he's the guy to take that QB2 job for sure.

Tim Patrick
Before camp started, I was writing his obituary in the sense that I thought Iaac TeSlaa would jump him for the WR3 spot. Who could have expected that Patrick would go out there and look like the old Denver Broncos version of himself? He's really surprised lately. He looks a little fast out there, and you can tell that he's built a nice rapport with Jared Goff. I'm interested to see what this looks like during the regular season.

Marcus Davenport
We've always known that Davenport was a good player. That wasn't the problem with him. It was injuries. But right now he looks really good. Like a guy who can have an 8-10 sack season and win Comeback Player of the Year, good. If he can stay healthy and have that kind of season, Brad Holmes has full cart planche, and he'll never have to buy another drink in this city again.

Bad ways

Hendon Hooker
Let's be super clear here on this first one. Hooker has actually looked pretty good this summer. What's making him stand out in a bad way is that he's with the third team right now. He has a guy in front of him, and that is not what anyone expected from him in year three. Maybe he steps up more and takes that spot back, but right now, he's just not where you want him to be.

Giovanni Manu
You see the improvements, but it's concerning that Dan Campbell says he takes two steps forward and one step back. The physical side is there more than ever, but the mental side still needs some work. The Lions do have time with him, but the hopes are that we see some stark improvements by the end of the summer. Otherwise, he's just a project taking up a roster spot.

Ennis Rakestraw
I'm not at all ready to jump to the conclusion that Rakestraw is an injury-prone player, but it doesn't look good at the moment. He missed most of his rookie season and then got hurt almost immediately at camp this year. This is supposed to be a big season for him to prove it. Luckily, it's not a big injury that's expected to keep him out for a while.
