10 trade targets for the Packers in 2024
USA TODAY Sports

The Green Bay Packers will not shy away from opportunities. Sure, the main philosophy of the franchise is to build through the draft, but that doesn't mean general manager Brian Gutekunst won't explore other avenues to acquire talent.

And, after saying during the Combine that he would consider trading for veterans, Gutekunst again mentioned that as a possibility during an interview with the Packers team media.

"There's a little bit of flexibility," Gutekunst said when asked about the five picks the Packers have in the first three rounds. "Whether it's moving around within the draft, or if there's players out there, veteran players that are available, that certainly could be a possibility as well. You never have enough, and you want them as high as they can be, but I think, with some of the things we have done in the past, we've set ourselves up to have some flexibility and ammunition as we go into this draft."

Options

But if the Packers are in fact willing to use their draft capital to acquire veterans, what options make the most sense?

To find out, it's important to evaluate positions of need, contract structure, and the potential trade partner's circumstances as well.

10 potential names

WR Brandon Aiyuk

  • Age: 25
  • Contract: $14.124 million in 2024
  • PFF grade in 2023: 92.3

Why it makes sense for the Packers: Green Bay loved Aiyuk in the 2020 draft, but the 49ers jumped ahead to take him (and the Packers gladfully ended up with Jordan Love). After an up and down start to his career, Aiyuk is coming off his best year, establishing himself as a top receiver.

Why it makes sense for the 49ers: The Niners would certainly love to keep Aiyuk, but they already have fellow receiver Deebo Samuel and several other high-priced players. With Aiyuk going to his fifth-year option season, money starts to be a problem.

WR Tee Higgins

  • Age: 25
  • Contract: $21.816 million in 2024
  • PFF grade in 2023: 72.1

Why it makes sense for the Packers: Higgins is not as good as Aiyuk, but he can certainly add a skill set that the Packers don't have in their receiving room. It's hard to combine trade compensation plus a big extension, and that's a consideration Gutekunst would have to make.

Why it makes sense for the Bengals: Higgins is a frequent name in trade talks, because he's under the franchise tag. And the timing of the decision, well before the deadline, amplified the speculation.

RB Tyler Allgeier

  • Age: 23
  • Contract: $985k in 2024, $1.1 million in 2025
  • PFF grade in 2023: 82.6

Why it makes sense for the Packers: The Packers need a complementary back alongside Aaron Jones, and Allgeier has been amazing. He's also cheap for two more years and young enough to be a full-time starter once Jones goes away.

Why it makes sense for the Falcons: Atlanta used a top-10 pick on Bijan Robinson, and under a new coaching staff they might feel inclined to use Allgeier less. However, they would certainly demand real compensation, because there's no contract motivation to move him.

RB Jeff Wilson

  • Age: 28
  • Contract: $3 million in 2024}
  • PFF grade in 2023: 59.4

Why it makes sense for the Packers: The RB need has been mentioned above, and Wilson has already shown how efficient he can be in this type of offense, both with the 49ers and with the Dolphins. His problem is to stay healthy, but as a backup that wouldn't be a major issue.

Why it makes sense for the Dolphins: Miami also has De'Von Achane and Raheem Mosters, so it would be smart to trade their third running back to create some cap room.

QB Trey Lance

Lance is still youngTim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports
  • Age: 23
  • Contract: $5.31 million in 2024; $22.408 million team option for 2025
  • PFF grade in 2023: N/A

Why it makes sense for the Packers: Gutekunst said he wants to invest in quarterbacks again. And looking at his options in the draft, most are of the same age or older than Lance, who has a much higher ceiling. An important point is that he has never been bad in the NFL, he just went to a situation where Kyle Shanahan had no patience. Gutekunst has already made a trade for a former high-drafted quarterback when he acquired DeShone Kizer in 2018.

Why it makes sense for the Cowboys: Dallas will probably have to extend Dak Prescott again, and he will be the team's quarterback for the long term. There might be some motivation with the Cowboys to free up some cap space, as Lance isn't cheap as a former third overall pick.

S Budda Baker

  • Age: 28
  • Contract: $14.6 million in 2024
  • PFF grade in 2023: 64.8

Why it makes sense for the Packers: Green Bay badly needs safeties, and Justis Mosqueda reported that they called the Cardinals last year to see if they could acquire Baker.

Why it makes sense for the Cardinals: Arizona is rebuilding, so it might be smart to trade an expensive veteran away for more draft capital.

S Justin Simmons

  • Age: 30
  • Contract: $14.5 million in 2024
  • PFF grade in 2023: 67.9

Why it makes sense for the Packers: Simmons is getting older and is coming off his worst season in quite some time, but he would still be a huge upgrade over what they have.

Why it makes sense for the Broncos: Denver is in a pretty bad cap situation, so moving on from an expensive player is a viable alternative.

S Talanoa Hufanga

  • Age: 25
  • Contract: $4.89 million in 2024
  • PFF grade in 2023: 70.5

Why it makes sense for the Packers: Hufanga is young and still cheap, even though the Packers would probably have to work out an extension. Plus, Green Bay will run a similar defensive scheme.

Why it makes sense for the 49ers: As mentioned in the Aiyuk section, the Niners need cap space, and they found Ji'Ayir Brown after Hufanga got hurt. Another consideration is that Hufanga tore his ACL in October.

DT Jonathan Allen

  • Age: 29
  • Contract: $15.5 million in 2024, $17 million in 2025
  • PFF grade in 2023: 59.7

Why it makes sense for the Packers: Green Bay haven't had such a good defensive lineman to pair with Kenny Clark. He's expensive, no doubt, but he would add a lot of interior ability.

Why it makes sense for the Commanders: Allen is not young anymore, and Washington has already shown a willingness to trade away veteran pieces to build from the ground.

LB Bobby Okereke, New York Giants

  • Age: 27
  • Contract: $8 million in 2024, $8.95 million in 2025, $8.95 million in 2026
  • PFF grade in 2023: 78.9

Why it makes sense for the Packers: Okereke has been a solid off-ball linebacker both for the Colts and the Giants, and he would be less expensive than De'Vondre Campbell. Moreover, he's under contract through 2026.

Why it makes sense for the Giants: New York had an underwhelming season last year, and now they will have a new defensive coaching staff under DC Shane Bowen. Changes are usually a good turnover opportunity, especially for a team that needs more draft capital.
