Well, that was ugly. The San Francisco 49ers lost the preseason opener to the Las Vegas Raiders, 34-7. Good thing this one doesn't count. Still, you'd like to see the team's young players perform better than this.
Only a couple of the starters played, so we didn't get a look at the team that will take the field in Pittsburgh on September 10th. But it is a little concerning that reports from joint practices sounded like the Raiders out-practiced the 49ers on Thursday and Friday, then outplayed the team's backups on Sunday.
There were plenty of things, good and bad that jumped out to me. Here are my observations from the Sin City beatdown.

Trey Lance, Nick Zakelj and Jason Poe are not helping each other.

It was a good day for Ronnie Bell . . . until he let a nice Brandon Allen pass slip through his hands for Sam Webb's interception and long return to set up another LV TD.— Matt Maiocco (@MaioccoNBCS) August 13, 2023
Just a couple of potential Week 1 starters played in the first half today. One of them is NCB Isaiah Oliver, who hasn't had a strong half. He was in coverage on that TD.— Matt Barrows (@mattbarrows) August 13, 2023
D'Shawn Jamison has showed me enough to be the returner until Ray Ray comes back.
I thought Ronnie Bell was decent as well but Jamison just looks different.— John Chapman (@JL_Chapman) August 13, 2023

Next up for the 49ers is a Saturday matchup with the Denver Broncos. I would expect more starters to play in this game.
