2022 Los Angeles Chargers win total: There is lots of buzz on the Bolts

It is easy to see why there is a lot of buzz about the Los Angeles Chargers right now. They have been close to making the playoffs the last couple of seasons and they have one of the best young quarterbacks in the NFL in Justin Herbert.

This offseason they used their top pick on an offensive lineman to protect that asset better and made a trade with the Bears to bring in DE/OLB Khalil Mack, who should improve their pass rush. They seem to be investing in all the right areas (copying the Rams).

Versatile safety Derwin James is looking for a new contract and it will be interesting to see how that impacts what the Chargers are trying to build. It won't impact the offense at all but he is definitely a difference maker on defense, which is where they need to see improvement.

The Chargers have a challenging schedule playing in the best division in football, the AFC West. However, missing the playoffs and finishing third last season gave them a great chance to ride a lighter schedule into some more meaningful results this year.

One thing they have to get better at is managing the game. You have to love their aggressive young coach but sometimes he is a little too aggressive and it might have kept the team from the playoffs last season. Analytics are great but you also have to win the games you are supposed to.

That kind of stuff can kill bets too so it is really buyer beware.

Los Angeles Chargers Win Total

Over 9.5 (-145)
Under 9.5 (+125)

Best Bet: Under 9

The Chargers won nine games a year ago. They look like a better team on paper right now, but so is Denver, and Las Vegas, and that is a quarter of their schedule so improving to get the 10 wins they need to cash the over is going to be difficult.

Speaking of Vegas, they host the Raiders in Week 1 and have another division game in Kansas City. That makes getting off to a strong start challenging. I am kind of hoping for some losses so I can get on them in the next chunk of their schedule.

After a couple of division games to start the season, the Chargers hit a stretch of four games where they can make some hay, playing Jacksonville and Houston back to back, plus a trip to Cleveland (who knows what they will be then), and home games against Denver and Seattle. This stretch is going to make or break their year.

After their bye week, the Chargers go to Atlanta, but beyond that the second half of the schedule includes only one other game I feel really confident they are going to win, hosting Miami on Dec. 11. Taking on the NFC West means they have to play three playoff teams from a year ago in San Francisco, Arizona, and the Los Angeles Rams and two of those three are on the road. So are contests against Indianapolis and Denver in Weeks 16 and 18. Those last two are going to be must-have games to get into the playoffs and to cash on the over but they are likely underdogs in both unless those teams fall off the rails unexpectedly.

This looks like a nine-win team again. Maybe that is good enough to get into the playoffs if they do enough damage in their division against teams like Denver, we will see. The Chargers are definitely going to be in the mix but I like the under.
