2023 NFL quarterback analysis: Atlanta Falcons

Current starter: Desmond Ridder | Current backups: Logan Woodside, Feleipe Franks, Marcus Mariota (IR)

State of the franchise: Rookie Ridder, a third-round pick, started the last four games, going 2-2 and flashing potential.

Ridder showed off a strong arm and mobility in the pocket, such as on this fourth-down conversion against the Bears.

Mariota, the former Heisman Trophy winner, began the season as the starter but failed to secure the position long term. The Falcons' move to Ridder spoke volumes about the organization’s thoughts on the former second overall pick.

Ridder finished 73-of-115 (63.5 percent) for 708 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Mariota went 184-of-300 (61.3 percent) for 2,219 yards, 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Key stat: Atlanta finished 31st in passing (158.8 yards per game), its worst rank since finishing last in 2006.

2023 outlook: The team might be tempted to explore trading for veteran QB Derek Carr — as ESPN's Adam Schefter mentioned recently — or signing Baltimore's Lamar Jackson via free agency in the off chance he becomes available.

Atlanta has the cap space to make a splash — roughly $56.65 million, per Over the Cap — but may find that money better spent filling the numerous gaps on defense.

Unless Jackson is on the market — which Baltimore would be crazy to let happen — the Falcons should give Ridder the keys to the offense and sign an inexpensive veteran as backup.

Pending free agent Teddy Bridgewater would be a solid choice. The former Panther and Saint has experience playing in the division.
