2023 NFL quarterback analysis: New York Jets

Current starter: Mike White | Current backups: Joe Flacco, Zach Wilson, Chris Streveler

State of the position: New York's quarterback problems started with misevaluating Wilson, who has struggled in two seasons. The former second overall pick completed only 54.5% of his passes in 2022, throwing for six touchdowns and seven interceptions.

In 2021, Wilson frequently drifted back in clean pockets and consequently was sacked for a league-high 370 yards in losses. That bad habit wasn't fixed this season.

Wilson lacks accuracy as well as consistency with his reads. In a loss to the Patriots in Week 11, he bottomed out (9-of-22 for 77 yards).

White played decently in relief and was the best quarterback. He averaged 298 yards passing mostly because he had to throw a lot.

In Week 12 against the Bears, White went 22-of-28 for three touchdowns -- easily his best game. However, he threw 57, 44, and 46 times without a TD pass in his final three starts.

As for Flacco, well, the Statue of Liberty is more mobile.

Key stat: White had a higher passer rating (75.7) than Flacco and Wilson but threw more interceptions (four) than touchdowns (three).

2023 QB forecast: Mike Lafleur's departure as offensive coordinator may complicate the possibility of impending San Francisco free agent Jimmy Garoppolo signing. Lafleur served as the 49ers passing game coordinator from 2017-2020. The Jets have not hired a new offensive coordinator yet.

Garoppolo, who threw for 16 TDs in 2022, has the experience to help stabilize New York's problems at QB. Derek Carr, who went 6-9 with the Raiders, is a popular name linked to the Jets. He probably will be cut in February. Otherwise, Las Vegas would owe him his salary and other guarantees.

Dealing Wilson for late-round draft compensation seems likely. White is a free agent and may be a good backup option. Flacco turned 38 recently and could return as a third quarterback.
