2024 Eagles' offense takes rightful place in NFL history with a stellar resume

Sometimes, numbers can tell the whole story, but sometimes it's all about who's on the field.

The 2024 Philadelphia Eagles' offense is a story told through multiple parts. From Eagles running back Saquon Barkley having a historic season on the ground to quarterback Jalen Hurts being overshadowed with arguably the best season of his career. That doesn't even include the offensive line play and the playmakers in the passing game.

That offense had it all. They were so good that CBS Sports writer Bryan DeArdo ranked them as the ninth-best offense of all time. Going back to the saying before, sometimes it's all about who's on the field.

"Last year's Eagles squad had it all. A 2,000-yard rusher in Saquon Barkley, elite quarterback play with Jalen Hurts, the dynamic receiving duo of A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, arguably the NFL's top offensive line, and a virtually unstoppable play -- the "Tush Push" -- that played a considerable role in their successful Super Bowl run.

Barkley was deservedly the unit's headliner, but Hurts also deserves a heap of credit for his role in the offense's success last year. Hurts, who actually ran for more touchdowns than Barkley, used his versatility to befuddle virtually every defense he and the Eagles faced last season. While his running prowess is well-documented, it was Hurts' ability to connect on the deep ball that really opened everything up for him and the rest of the Eagles offense."

Eagles' 2024 offense deserved to be on the list

Just for fun, the stats show part of why they made the list. The Eagles were ranked eighth in total offense with 367.2 yards per game. Even without a "strong" passing game, the rushing attack was second in the league with 179.3 yards per game. They were also sixth in scoring offense with 27.2.

Getting a bit deeper into stats no one would look at that and see how good this offense was; the offense was seventh in giveaways with 15 and sixth in turnover margin at +11. The Eagles also established a strong time of possession, ranking fourth in average drive time with 3:01. They finished second, behind the Dallas Cowboys, in total plays run, with 1,150.

That dominance in time of possession and holding onto the football was thanks in part to Barkley, who ran for 2,005 yards in the regular season and finished with an NFL-record 2,504 rushing yards for the whole year. The rushing attack got some help from Hurts who finished with a team-high 14 touchdowns and picked up 630 yards.

Everyone looks at Hurts as the Tush Push guy, but he had a career season in the air as he hit a personal best in completion percentage (68.7%) and passer rating (103.7). He got some help from his old reliable receiver A.J. Brown, who had a third straight 1,000-yard year with the Eagles and DeVonta Smith caught a team-high eight touchdowns.

The offense would be nothing without the play of the offensive line, which saw Lane Johnson and Jordan Mailata selected as All-Pros. First-year starting center Cam Jurgens and Landon Dickerson were named to the Pro Bowl as well. Even Mekhi Becton was able to turn his career around at right guard in his only season, and the Los Angeles Chargers rewarded him with a new contract in the offseason.

What's the scariest part about this 2024 offense? 10 of the 11 starters from that team are back in 2025. Yeah, this unit is only going to get better, so NFL teams are being put on notice.
