Competitive football is not so far away.
While the NFL's regular season is still a few months out, fans can look forward to the preseason schedule to at least provide some very real roster competition and intense effort much sooner than that. In fact, the very first kickoff for the NFL season—at least the preseason—comes at the tail end of July.
Training camp will start just before that, but the annual Hall of Fame game will take place on July 31 between the Detroit Lions and L.A. Chargers.
The exhibition in Canton will have everyone's attention because it means that their own favorite teams will begin to play soon thereafter. The Chargers and Lions will each play four preseason tilts due to their participation in the Hall of Fame game, but the Kansas City Chiefs and others will play three games apiece.
For the Chiefs, their destinations are already known, but the NFL has not yet revealed the times and dates for those games. Fans can count on facing the Arizona Cardinals in Week 1 of the preseason, however, along with the games against the Seattle Seahawks and Chicago Bears.
The final game of three, against the Bears, will be the only home game of the preseason, giving fans their first chance to tailgate at Arrowhead.
For the Chiefs, the preseason will provide some important competition in a number of areas. Left tackle will be a spot to watch to see how Jaylon Moore looks as a potential starter and to check on Josh Simmons' health. Omarr Norman-Lott, the team's second-round pick, was brought in to provide greater punch on the inside next to Chris Jones. If he looks good, the line could be significantly more dangerous.
On offense, all eyes will be on wide receivers like Rashee Rice and Hollywood Brown to ensure both are healthy. How Jack Cochrane looks returning from a season-ending injury will also be key on special teams. And of course, everyone wants to see Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Chris Jones, and the other stars, even in limited preseason snaps.
Against the Cardinals, Chiefs fans should watch for the presence of rookie Walter Nolen along Arizona's defensive line. He was often mocked to the Chiefs in the first round. New imports like Dalvin Tomlinson, Josh Sweat, and Calais Campbell were also vital to the Cardinals' pass rush reinvention.
Speaking of reinvention, the Seahawks shipped off Geno Smith and D.K. Metcalf as part of a complete offensive overhaul. Now it's Sam Darnold and Cooper Kupp running Klint Kubiak's offense.
The Bears are going to be one of the most intriguing franchises of all this season as Caleb Williams comes into his second season. Ben Johnson is in charge, and Colston Loveland is the newest target. It's also a chance to see Joe Thuney again (we miss you already, Joe) as part of a remade offensive front in the Windy City.
