The Cleveland Browns selected S Grant Delpit in the 2nd round (44th overall) of the 2020 NFL Draft. As he goes into the 2026 season, let’s take a look at his history and his future outlook.

Background Information

Grant Delpit was born on September 20, 1998, in New Orleans, Louisiana. When Hurricane Katrina hit, Grant and his family relocated to Houston, Texas. Delpit was a standout high school player at both St. Thomas High and Lamar High. He eventually played himself at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. Here, he recorded 47 tackles and five interceptions as a senior.

Following Hurricane Katrina, he and his family relocated to Houston, Texas. He attended St. Thomas High School and Lamar High School before finishing at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, where he recorded 47 tackles and five interceptions as a senior.

To further his football ambitions, Grant committed to playing for LSU. He started every game as a sophomore and junior, finishing his college career with 199 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, 7.0 sacks, and eight interceptions. Delpit won the Jim Thorpe Award in 2019 as the nation’s top defensive back, earned consensus All-American honors, and helped lead LSU to the CFP National Championship.

He opted out of his senior season to enter the 2020 NFL Draft.

Grant checked in at the combine, standing 6’2½” tall while weighing in at 213 pounds. His pro day produced a sub-4.4 40-yard dash time to showcase his speed and range on the backend.

Career Trajectory

Delpit’s career got off to a shaky start when his entire 2020 rookie season was wiped out due to a torn Achilles he suffered in training camp. Because of the obvious surgery to follow, he began his NFL career on injured reserve.

Grant returned to make his debut in 2021 and started in 7 games (appearing in 15). Racking up a combined 66 tackles with one sack, one interception, and three pass deflections, Delpit quickly served notice that he was able to excel in the league.

Grant’s official breakout finally happened in 2022 when he started all 17 games with 105 combined tackles (team-high) and 4 interceptions. His week 16 game against the Commanders stands out in the stat box with two picks, two passes defended, one tackle for loss, and seven combined tackles. It was the kind of performance that showcased Delpit’s versatility on defense.

Delpit started all 13 games he played in 2023 before a groin injury ended his season early. Even with a shortened season, he still posted 80 combined tackles, 1.5 sacks, and one interception. With no missed steps, he returned in 2024 with a career-high 111 combined tackles in 16 starts.

Subsequently, in 2025 Grant was all over the field again, and it would appear that the arrow is firmly pointed up for a player going into his age 27 season.

Contract Status

Delpit is going into the final year of the three-year, $36 million contract extension he signed in December 2023. At approximately $12 million per year, the deal includes $23.6 million guaranteed overall. In 2026, he carries an $8.033 million cap hit with a base salary of $1.215 million and will become an unrestricted free agent in 2027.

2026 Outlook

Delpit will be looked upon as a vital tool for bringing the defense up to speed early in the season after the departure of defensive coordinator, Jim Schwartz. New DC Mike Rutenberg most recently served as the defensive pass game coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons. Rutenberg is credited with developing third-round pick S Xavier Watts, who led all rookies and tied for second among all players with five interceptions. Atlanta’s safety duo of Watts and Jessie Bates III tied for the second-most interceptions by any safety duo (8 total) in the NFL. This bodes well for Delpit as he will likely be leaned on to be a factor in the weekly gameplan.

Delpit is coming off a productive 2025 showing solid coverage skills, tackling ability in the box, and sideline-to-sideline speed. This is his chance to post another strong campaign in a contract year. When on the field, Grant has consistently produced tackles and takeaways. Basically, if he can avoid the injury bug and continue his momentum, Grant will position himself for a lucrative contract in 2027.
