2026 NFL Mock Draft: Chargers Select Top Defensive Talent

Any team that is coached by Jim Harbaugh is built on the principal of an elite defense and power running game.

This template is no different for the Los Angeles Chargers who completely flipped the culture in one year under the reign of Harbaugh.

It took a while for the offense to get going but the defense hit the ground running from the first game of the season.

The Chargers had one of the worst pass rushes in the league last season, so the unit’s success was predicated on strong play in the secondary.

Unfortunately, many of the team’s defensive backs were free agents and Los Angeles did little to replace them.

Cornerback Tarheeb Still emerged as one of the best pass defenders in the entire NFL in his rookie season but there isn’t much help left on the roster outside of him.

Luckily, there is a way the Chargers can still compete next season and add to the cornerback room in the offseason.

Pro Football Focus recently crafted a way-too-early 2026 NFL mock draft that had Los Angeles selecting a defensive back.

The site predicted that they will draft Malik Muhammad with the 23rd pick.

The Texas cornerback is not the most athletic but he more than makes up for it with his incredible ball skills.

He doesn’t intercept many passes because he is hardly ever targeted, but when he does, he usually makes a play on the ball.

In two seasons at Texas, Muhammad has 12 passes defensed.

A combination of Still and Muhammad has the chance to create a no-fly zone in Los Angeles.

The rookie also possesses incredible ball skills, recording four interceptions and 10 passes defensed last season.

In due time they could end up becoming the best cornerback duo in the NFL.
